The Commander of the Army has the theme of Celebrating Sinhala and Tamil New Year with all the people together rather than celebrating the New Year alone. To enhance the strategy, with the direction of Commander of the Army an Supervision of Security force Wanni, 56 Infantry Division organized a traditional New Year Festival to mark the Sinhala and Tamil New Year on 20 April 2024 at Public Ground Vavuniya with the participation of large crowd of gathering.
District Secretary of Vavuniya P A Sarathchandra and government officials graced the occasion. The festival featured traditional aesthetic events and various games such as cycle races for males and females, Marathons, selection of the ‘Avurudu Kumara, Kumari,’, Tug-of-war, Kotta Pora, Kolam Rata Drawing competition, Eye-placing on the elephant, Bun-eating, Coconut leaves weaving, Coconut-Scraping, Playing Musical Chairs, Inflating a Balloon, The lime-on-spoon race and many other Sinhala and Tamil traditional games.
The evening culminated in a musical show, featuring performances with 'Agnee' music band and other artists. This event has been planned and executed under the direction and guidance of Commander Security Force (Wanni) Major General WPADW Nanayakkara RSP VSV USP ndu and event has conducted by supervision on General Officer Commanding 56 Infantry Division Major General S Kasturimudali RSP ndc psc. District Secretary of Vavuniya, GOCs of 64 and 54, Deputy Inspector General of Police Vavuniya, Dy GOC 56 Infantry Division, Senior Staff Officers of SFHQ (W), Brigade Commanders, 56 Division Staff Officers, Commanding Officers, Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks associated with the event.
