The Vesak Festival, commemorates the birth, enlightenment (nibbana) and death (parinirvana) of Gauthama Buddha in Teravada, Tibetan Buddhism and Navayana Vesak. The Buddhist devotees all over the world, including Sri Lanka celebrate this religious festival on a grand scale. Vesak, also known as Buddha Jayanthi, is a holiday traditionally observed by Buddhists in the month of May.
On the instructions of the Commander, Security Force (Wanni), Major General Champaka Ranasinghe and under the guidance of Brigadier General Staff, Brigadier Pradeep Gamage, the premises of all the under-command formations of Security Force (Wanni) celebrated the Vesak Festival by displaying Vesak lanterns, giving "Dansal" and attending religious observances. The Vesak lanterns display was arranged with the "Dansala" on the opposite of the Security Force Headquarters (Wanni), along A-9 road on 5th May, 2023. With the lighting of Vesak lanterns by the Brigadier General Staff, Brigadier Pradeep Gamage large number of civilians gathered to witness the Vesak lanterns, and the displaying of Vesak lanterns is scheduled to be opened to the public till 8th of May.
On an account of Vesak Festival in Vavuniya Town a "Vesak Zone" was organized and conducted by the District Secretariat, Vavuniya. At the request of the District Secretary, Vavuniya, the Commander, Security Force (Wanni), provided resources and manpower of troops in Security Force (Wanni) to make the "Vesak Zone" a success. The Vesak lanterns made by troops of Security Force (Wanni) were also exhibited in the "Vesak Zone". On the reuest, huge stage put up by the troops in the center of Vavuniya Town, a religious songs concert ( “Bakthi Gee” ) was also conducted, and a large number of people assembled to witness this concert. On account of Vesak Festival with the contribution of the Traders Association, Vavuniya a "Dansala" (Rice) has also been organized and it is to be held on 6th May, 2023 in Sri Bodhi Dakshinarama Viharaya, Vavuniya.
