Continuing the concept of providing a sound foundation for early childhood development to the future generation in under privileged areas the 9th “Piyawara” Preschool was declared opened on 06 May 2019 in the remote mixed community village, Alagalla in Vavuniya. The foundation stone for this Preschool was laid on 24 February 2019 and construction was completed by troops under Security Force (Wanni). The preschool was a long felt necessity in the area to provide a sound preschool education for hundreds of children from under privileged area.
The concept was introduced into the area by Commander Security Force Wanni, Major General Kumudu Perera RWP RSP VSV USP ndu, after observing the paucity of facilities and after realizing that these areas will be developed only by the future generations from the same villages.
Hemas Holdings PLC, through its “Corporate Social Responsibility” arm, the Outreach Foundation, under the project “Piyawara” provided Rs 3,729,627.20 for construction of the preschool on the directions of the Executive Director Hemas Outreach Foundation Mrs Shiromi Masakorala. They also provided all required furniture, play equipment and educational tools to the school. Piyawara is a holistic approach to early childhood development in Sri Lanka initiated by the Children’s Secretariat of the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs and Hemas. Alagalla will be the 52nd Piyawara preschool opened in Sri Lanka and these schools are spread across the country.
The project was completed by Commander 211 Brigade Colonel Lal Wijethunga RWP RSP USP on the directions of General Officer Commanding 21 Division Brigadier Kumar Jayapathirana RSP. Construction advice and supervision was by Major W C Deshapriya under the guidance of Lieutenant Colonel H B C Mahendra from the 2 (V) Engineer Services Regiment.
During a simple ceremony, the preschool was declared opened by Commander Security Force (Wanni) Major General Kumudu Perera RWP RSP VSV USP ndu.
The General Officer Commanding 21 Division, Brigadier Kumar Jayapathirana RSP, the Commander 211 Brigade Colonel Lal Wijethunga RWP RSP USP, Additional Divisional Secretary Mr Radha Krishnan Anandan and number of students with their parents too were present at the occasion.
