In view of assisting to uplift the economy of people in Wanni region, 61 Division initiated a programme in collaboration with Coconut Cultivation Board on 12 October 2018 to distribute coconut saplings and valuable plants such as Halmilla, Mee, Bulu, Kumbuk, Wood Apple, Tamarind and etc.
Over 103 localities owe at least a half of acre land in 61 Division area were facilitated to uplift their financial background and also to utilise the arable lands for cultivating commercially valued cropsthrough this distribution programme.
This valuable programme was initiated by the General Officer Commanding of 61 Division Brigadier K D C G J Thilakarathne RWP RSP in keeping the concept of Commander Security Force (Wanni) Major General Kumudu Perera RWP RSP VSV USP ndu to build up the way for reconciliation among all ethnicities in Wanni region.
Adding another philanthropic event to the day’s programme on account of the 69th Army Anniversary, the Commander 612 Brigade Colonel S W B Welagedara RSP USP organised a programme to distribute school bags and essential stationary items for 33 preschool children in the area.
The District Secretary Vavuniya Mr I M Haneefa graced the event as the Chief Guest while Brigadier General Staff of Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) Brigadier H P N K Jayapathirana RSP, General Officer Commanding of 61 Division Brigadier K D C G J Thilakarathne RWP RSP, Additional District Secretary Mr Thiresh Kumar, Divisional Secretary Vavuniya Mr K Uthayaraja, Regional Manager of Coconut Cultivation Board North Province Mr D Vaikunthan, Medical Officer of Government Hospital Iranaiiluppaikulam Mr Rohana Sumanasekara were present at the occasion.
