Friends of Sri Lanka Group members in the European Parliament, Hon. Geoffrey Van Orden and Hon. William Earl made an official call-on the Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) on 04 January 2019 and held a discussion with the Commander, Major General Kumudu Perera RWP RSP VSV USP ndu, at its Headquarters with a view to understand the military perspective on social development programmes and to see such projects implemented by the Army in Wanni Region. They were accompanied by Protocol Officer Mrs M L F Mafusa.
The delegation was presented with a comprehensive briefing by the Colonel General Staff of Security Force Headquarters (Wanni), Colonel Anil Peiris RSP USP psc, on social welfare and reconciliation projects carried out by the Army. The briefing was followed by a lengthy interactive session where the European Parliamentarians had many queries regarding the Army’s commitment to reconciliation and social welfare activities carried out by the soldiers.
Among other matters discussed were the hardships faced by people due to economical constraints, disaster situations (flood and severe drought), lack of livelihood resources and poverty of people. At the end of the cordial meeting, the Commander Security Force (Wanni) Major General Kumudu Perera presented mementoes to the delegation extending warm greetings from the side of the Sri Lanka Army.
Later on the delegation visited resettled areas and discussed the way of uplifting infrastructure facilities of those villages.
