“BUDO” SELF DEFENCE MARTIAL ART COURSE AT SECURITY FORCE HEADQUARTERS (WANNI)

A selected set of Officers and Other Ranks representing all formations under Security Force (Wanni) was trained on self defence martial art style named “Kiyoshiryu Budo”.

The Budo Martial Art style was initially introduced by Major General Jagath Gunawardena as the then General Officer Commanding of 57 Division to train Emergency Response Team soldiers with the fullest consent and blessings of Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake RWP RSP VSV USP USACGSC.

Continuing the same, the first Budo Martial Art training session was commenced at Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) on 01 August 2019 and launched for 15 working days culminating successfully with a glamorous marshal art show excelled by trainee students on 17 August 2019.

“Kiyoshiryu Budo” is one of the well-known martial art styles practiced by number of countries all around the world. The founder of this martial art style was the then Chief of Underworld Alleviating Unit of National Police Agency in Japan, ‘Headmaster (Soke) Hanshi Kiyoshi Sakamotho” (Black Belt 10th Dan).

Unlike other styles, “Kiyoshiryu Budo” is not merely a martial art practiced as a Sport and it has been designed by its forefathers as a self defence fighting method which aims to sustain a person with a stable mentality in any challenging situation such as mental or physical suppression. In same this style will enrich a person with a sound knowledge and proper training to accomplish hard tasks preciously, efficiently and effectively. Managing urgent circumstance using self confidence and strength is another vital factor generates through practising “Kiyoshiryu Budo”.

The short term course conducted at Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) was basically designed to train soldiers when they have to confront a situation causing multiple effects for their personal safety and impeding their prime duty. In same, this course will be a great impact for soldiers to maintain the physical strength and mental stability in any circumstance when accomplishing their routine tasks and special duties such as occasions of Emergencies and ensuring Internal Security.

As a constructive approach towards the training, the Commander Security Force (Wanni) Major General Jagath Gunawardena RSP VSV USP ndc psc has planned to continue this course in series of training sessions each comprises of 15 working days. In that context, Security Force (Wanni) has expected to train over 2000 soldiers (Emergency Response Team) representing all under command formations. During the first stage 25 Officers and 1000 Other Ranks were trained and their passed out was held on 17 August 2019.

The second phase was focussed to introduce Budo for all soldiers performing duties under Security Force (Wanni). Further, it has been planned to extend this course for another step after introducing to the Battalion Training Curriculum allocating 15 days of training package.

Though this course has been comprised of 15 working days, each trainee soldier will be allocated 8 hours per day and altogether they will be trained minimum 120 hours in which this training time period will be considered as a full time long course.

The course will be conducted by a team of well experienced and qualified Army instructors along with one of the veteran martial art instructors in Sri Lanka Renshi Clement De Zoysa (Black Belt 8th Dan) as the chief instructor of the course.

The qualified instructor team under the guidance of Renshi Clement De Zoysa train the troops covering all subject areas required for the initial step of “Kiyoshiryu Budo” martial art style and trainees who completed the course successfully will be awarded with “Green standard belt”.

The series of all training sessions will be closely monitored by General Staff Officer II (Training) Major S U B Pilimathalawwe psc under the directions of Colonel General Staff of Headquarters Security Force (Wanni) Lt Col GBWMRKR Bandara RWP RSP.

Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) grandly organised the closing ceremony with a colourful exhibition of performances excelled by trainees on “Kiyoshiryu Budo” fighting style and this ceremony was culminated with a grand musical night organised to make the minds relax of soldiers. The Commander Security Force (Wanni) Major General Jagath Gunawardena RSP VSV USP ndc psc made his presence for the closing ceremony and the awarding of certificate of the course.

The chief instructor Renshi Clement De Zoysa along with his team of instructors, General Officers Commanding of 21, 54, 61 Divisions, Brigadier General Staff, the Brigadier Administration and Quartering together with all Senior Officers and Officers of Headquarters Security Force (Wanni) too were present at the occasion.
