“BUDO” MARTIAL ART PROGRAMME COURSE NO 03 ENDS WITH A MEGA TOURNAMENT

As a concept initiated by the Commander Security Force (Wanni) Major General Jagath Gunawardena RSP VSV USP ndc psc in wake of moulding soldiers under Security Force (Wanni) for any exigent circumstance, Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) conducted series “Budo” self defence martial art courses from 01 to 16 August 2019 and 05 to 25 September 2019 at the Headquarters premises of Security Force (Wanni).

The third phase of this martial art training course was commenced on 28 October 2019 and concluded on 15 November 2019 with a mega tournament selecting highly competent students for Instructor Grading.

These courses have been basically designed to train soldiers when they have to confront a situation causing multiple effects for their personal safety and their prime duty as a soldier. In same, these courses will be a great impact for soldiers to maintain the physical strength and mental stability in any circumstance when accomplishing their routine tasks and special duties.

09 Officers and 308 Other Ranks qualified in “Green and Blue” standard belt were opted out from phase number I and II to follow the phase number III. The set of students qualified in “Green” standard were lifted to the “Blue” standard in phase number III. The group already had “Blue” standard was qualified with the highest level of “Blue” standard belt while selecting them for Instructor Grading. This phase was too comprised of 15 training days.

Giving a novel experience to the trainees, a mega tournament of Martial Art was organised during two days to contest and excel the performances acquired by trainees throughout their training period. The tournament was comprised of 17 Martial Art Events and trainees represented in each style of event were secured top places through their performances exhibited in front of the well experienced and qualified judge board represented from Sri Lanka Army Karate Association.

The final day of the tournament was much amused for all onlookers for making them to witness eye catching stunt activities such as breaking solid materials, stick fighting and unarmed fighting sessions exhibited by the trainees who performed brilliantly the Art what they learned during a short period of time.

Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) under the instructions of Commander Major General Jagath Gunawardena RSP VSV USP ndc psc was able to complete of conducting three phases of training sessions setting over 2500 troops under Security Force (Wanni) to award with basic qualifications of ‘Kiyoshiryu Budo’ martial art style. And among these trained troops, 11 Officers and 278 Other Ranks were selected for Instructor Grading.

The closing ceremony and awarding of certificates were graced by the Commander Security Force (Wanni) Major General Jagath Gunawardena RSP VSV USP ndc psc as the chief guest and he praised the skills and talents acquired by soldiers who underwent the course successfully.

A team of well experienced and qualified Army instructors along with one of the veteran martial instructors in Sri Lanka Renshi Mr Clement De Zoysa (Black Belt - Dan 8) as the chief instructor conducted these courses.

The General Officer Commanding Officer of 56 Division, Brigadier General Staff, Brigadier Administration and Quartering, the Commanders of 211, 212 and 571 Brigades together with Senior Staff Officers of Headquarters Security Force (Wanni) too were present at the occasion
