A contingent of more than 30 troops including 02 Officers of the Security Force HQ- Wanni this afternoon (4) quickly responded and brought a major bushfire that was fast spreading in the Kilinochchi branch of the Jaffna University compound under control.
On being informed of the outbreak of the fire, Major General J.P.C Peiris RWP RSP ndc, General Officer Commanding, 57 Infantry Division instructed troops of the nearby 9 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (9 VIR) camp to attend to it before it causes a major destruction to the campus buildings and its infrastructure.
Troops as expected using water bowsers and extinguishers managed to bring the fire completely under control with the assistance of the members of the Kilinochchi Municipality Fire Department. University authorities praised the troops for their timely action and efforts made to prevent any damage being caused to the buildings. Commander, 573 Infantry Brigade and Commanding Officer of 9 VIR closely supervised the troops.
