The Sinhala and Tamil New Year is a time of the year that has long been celebrated in the history of our multicultural nation which has strengthened the relationships between the young and the old over the years. Hence, as a concept which was brought to life by the Commander, Security Forces Headquarters (Wanni), Major General DMHD Bandara RWP RSP USP, the “Wanni Surya Mangallaya” was held on the 10th of April 2021 at the Security Forces Headquarters (Wanni) premises, with the participation of officers and soldiers of all under command establishments. The number of traditional games, rites and rituals were restricted however to a smaller number, in view of the Covid-19 pandemic situation.
The “Wanni Surya Mangallaya” commenced with the Marathon upon the wave of the flag by Major General DMHD Bandara RWP RSP USP which consisted of both men and women, and was then followed by the bicycle race.
Throughout the day, officers, soldiers and civil servants took part in a multitude of traditional Avurudu events, where they all enjoyed and had a good time as a whole.
Upon the completion of all 35 of these traditional events, an awards ceremony was held to distribute the gifts for the winners and was concluded with the awarding of gifts for the AvuruduKumaraya and Kumariya.
