SINHALA AND TAMIL YOUNG WOMEN JOIN THE SRI LANKA ARMY
A grand level ceremony was held at the Security Forces Headquarters (Wanni) on 26 August 2013 to enlist 54 young women to the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force (to the Sri Lanka Army Women’s Corps). Out of these 54, 10 are Sinhala and the rest (44) is Tamil. These young Tamil women were selected from Jaffna, Mullaittivu, Batticaloa and Vavuniya districts. All these young female recruits will be given training for approximately 3 ½ months and thereafter these Tamil female soldiers are expected to be deployed in the Army establishments close to their native areas.
Having accepted the invitation extended by Major General MHSB Perera RWP RSP ndu psc the Commander Security Forces (Wanni), Major General AWJC de Silva RWP USP ndu psc the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Major General EKJK Wijayasiri Lsc the Provost Marshal of the Sri Lanka Army attended the ceremony as the Guest of Honour.
Priests of all religions in the area, Divisional Commanders, Brigade Commanders, Battalions Commanders and many other senior Army officers serving in Security Forces Headquarters (Wanni) area, senior officers from Air Force and Police in Vavuniya, Mr. C. A. Mohamraz the Addl GA Mullaittivu, Mrs. S. Mohanthan the Addl GA Vavuniya and Mrs. Stanley de Mel the Addl GA Mannar were among the invitees. Parents and relatives of newly enlisted female recruits amounting around 500 too attended the ceremony and the parents during the ceremony handed their daughters to the Sri Lanka Army.
