The annual Kovil festival of the Golden Temple at Omanthai, “Paththini Pooja”, was organized by the Security Force Headquarters Wanni on instructions of the Commander Security Force (Wanni), Major General Kumudu Perera RWP RSP VSV USP ndu,as another step in the direction of reconciliation. The colourful event was held for 7 days since 10 to 16 July 2018 at the Golden Kovil in Omanthai. The event was organized on a request made by the custodian of the Kovil, Mr. Gunarathnam.
The festival was patronised by large crowds of Hindu devotees to worship“Goddess Kannagi” (Kannaki Amman or Paththini),venerated as the epitome of chastity. Goddess Kannagiis being worshiped as Paththini by Sinhalese in different areas in island wide.
The culmination of 7 days of festivity comprised of colourful cultural events, Indian Traditional Drum Display, Kawadi Dances, Fire Display Dances, etc.
The General Officer Commanding 61 Division Brigadier K D C J G Thilakarathne RWP RSPand his troops organizedthe event.
District Secretary Vavuniya, Mr. I M Hanifa, the Supirintendant of Police Vavuniya Division, Mr.Thennakoon and Officials representing public and private sectors in Vavuniya area were present as other distinguished guests for the occasion.
