The Commander of the Army has the theme of Celebrating Sinhala and Tamil New Year by all people together rather than celebrating New Year along. To enhance and prove the Commander of the Army strategy, with the Direction of Security force Wanni, 59 Infantry Division and 64 Infantry Divisions organized a traditional New Year Festival to mark the Sinhala and Tamil New Year 2024 on Sunday (07 April) at Diamond Sports Club Ground Mulliawalai with participation of large crowd of gathering.
Honorable State Defence Minister Pramitha Bandara Thennakoon participate to the occasion as chief guest and other invitees raise the National flag while singing national anthem to start the programme. Then visit the special places in the premises. Traditional aesthetic events added colour to the festival.
The New Year festival consisted with several games such as cycle race male and female, marathon male and female, selection of the New Year prince and princes - “Awurudu Kumara” and “Awurudu Kumariya”, Grease pole climbing, Tug of War, Pillow fights and number of other traditional fun making games also held during the festival. During and end of the festival the Chief Guest and special invitees gave away gifts and trophies to winners in different competitions. Thereafter, entering to the evening musical show FIESTA commence and it performed by Karuna with SAREGAMA music band and three main artists were performed in the show, Sathranga Army dancing group and Arundathi dancing group also performed and colourfull the nigh.
Honorable State Defence Minister Pramitha Bandara Thennakoon as a chief guest and Divisional Secretary Mullaittivu Mr. A. Umamaheshwaram, Additional Divisional Secretaries (Administration & Land), Assistance Commissioner local government and other all government officials were participate for the event. This event has been planned and executed under the direction and supervision of Commander Security Force (Wanni) Major General WPADW Nanayakkara RSP VSV USP ndu and event has conducted by guidance and supervision on General Officer Commanding 64 Infantry Division Major General MS Dewapriya USP ndc and General Officer Commanding 59 Infantry Division Major General WMPM Wijesooriya RWP RSP ndu. All Brigade Commanders, all Commanding Officer and all Other Rankers of both Infantry Divisions dedications and contributions mark the success of the event. Five thousand civilians were participate Sinhala and Tamil New Year Traditional Festival.
