In a vibrant display of tradition and unity, the Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) celebrated the Sinhala and Tamil New Year 2026 with a series of cultural and religious observances on 14 April 2026. The event was held under the guidance and patronage of the Commander, Security Forces (Wanni), Major General K M P S B Kulatunga RSP ndc psc.
The day’s proceedings commenced with the symbolic lighting of the hearth (Kiri Ithiraweema) at 1051 hours in front of the Headquarters Office Complex. This sacred ritual marked the dawn of the New Year, signifying purification, renewal, and the dispelling of past misfortunes an age-old tradition deeply rooted in Sri Lankan culture.
To uplift the spirits of officers and other ranks who were unable to return home for the New Year, a musical entertainment programme was organized under the guidance of the Security Forces Commander. The event created a lively and enjoyable atmosphere, fostering camaraderie and morale among all ranks.
The celebration was further enriched by the presence of the Security Forces Commander (Wanni), who attended the ments with his mother and son. Several officers and their families also participated, adding a warm and familial spirit to the occasion.
The reflected the core values of unity, discipline, and cultural reverence upheld by the Sri Lanka Army, while fostering a renewed sense of purpose, harmony, and collective strength for the year ahead.
