Five million worth of scholarships were awarded among five hundred selected pupils in the 56 Division area, on 26 July 2013 under the patronage of Hon. Governor – Northern Province, Major General (Retd) G A Chandrasiri RWP USP ndc psc at Gamini College in Vavuniya. Under this programme 299 Tamil students, 190 Sinhala students, and 11 Muslim students were awarded scholarships. More than Five hundred of pupils, parents and distinguish guests were presented at the occasion
This effort was initiated by the Hon. Governor - Northern Province as a constituent of “Sisu Diviyata Athwelak†in line with the His Excellency the President, Mahinda Rajapaksa’s admirable concept on development of school education. The programme was directed by the Commander Security Forces (Wanni) Maj Gen M H S B Perera RWP RSP ndu psc, while General Officer Commanding of the 56 Division, Brigadier D A R Ranawaka RSP IG coordinated and supervised its implementation. Five hundred school children, selected on the basis of low income and badly affected due to loss of guardians were given priority in the selection. This endeavour has aimed at developing the school education in the Northern Province, which was seriously affected due to thirty years of long drawn conflict. It is expected that this will give substantial benefits for the children to continue their education devoid of any interruption and to build them to be worthy citizens of the Sri Lanka.
