RE-WRITING OF BUDDHIST INHERITANCE IN MANNAR AREA BY THE ARMY

The Buddhist inheritance was rewritten by the Army troops serving under 54 Infantry Division in Mannar, under guidance of the General Officer Commanding, 54 Infantry Division, Major General Indrajith Bandara RWP RSP USP ndu by engaging in historical meritorious activities on 26 and 27 May 2021 in parallel to the Vesak Day celebration of the year 2021.

On 26 Of May 2021 newly constructed temple “ Sri Vijayathilakaramaya” consisting of “Buddha Shrine Room, Ath Pawura”, “Bodhi Prakaraya”, “Bell Tower” (Gantara Kuluna), “Dhamma” preaching hall and a Sangawasaya at Kondachchi, Mannar was vested with the Maha Sangha during a fitting ceremony by Major General Indrajith Bandara RWP RSP USP ndu. Lord Buddha’s sacred relics were enshrined in the Buddha Shrine Room, which is a significant point to note. Construction of the temple was carried out by troops of 542 Infantry Brigade with the funds donated by the Commander 542 Infantry Brigade, his family and well wishers.

On 27 May 2021, a newly constructed Walakulu Bemma and a Bodhi protection fence (Ran Weta) were declared open at Manu Vehera at Headquarters of 54 Infantry Division at Thallady. Further, this event was much valued with the enshrinement of two Lord Buddha’s sacred relics in the Shrine Room at the Manu Vehera. The constructions also were carried out with the contribution of the troops serving in Thallady camp and also from a few well-wishers. About 1000 vesak lanterns that were displayed in and around the Camp and the rotating vesak lantern displayed near Gimanhala facility complex added colour to the sacred ceremony.

Both the events that were conducted in strict compliance with the COVID 19 guidelines with minimum participation, bear testimony to the dedication and devotion of the troops serving under 54 Infantry Division, to up lift and rewrite the lost Buddhist inheritance.
