The city of Vavuniya was transformed into a hive of festive activities and atmosphere because of the New Year festival organized by the Security Force Wanni in the Vavuniya Municipality Grounds on 10 April 2018. The event was organized under the instructions and supervision of Commander Security Force (Wanni) Major General Kumudu Perera RWP RSP USP ndu. Contribution by Navy, Airforce, Civil Defence Force, other Govt institutes, Traders Association and civil organizations were coordinated by the District Secretariat office – Vavuniya under the directions and supervision of the District Secretary, Mr. Somarathna Vidhanapathirana.
Day’s events commenced with the start of the marathon and the bicycle race that was flagged off by the Security Force Commander Major General Kumudu Perera RWP RSP USP ndu. Thereafter traditional events commenced with hoisting of the National Flag by the Government Agent Mr. Somarathna Vidhanpathirana.
Traditional New Year games included “Gami Gedara”, “Grease Gaha’, Pillow-Fight, Tug-of-War, Fancy Dress Parade, beauty pageants, balloon race etc.
Religious Leaders representing Buddhist, Hindu, Catholic and Islam invoked blessings at the outset. Deputy Inspector General Vavuniya Mr. Deshabandu Thennakoon, Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. T M S M Tennakoone, Assistant Divisional Secretaries, representatives from Tri Services and the President of Traders Association graced this occasion as distinguished invitees.
Security Force Headquarters Wanni also provided lunch for over 4000 civilians in a banquette style “Dansela”. Major part of organizing and setting up was done by the Officers and soldiers of Security Force Wanni.
Main sponsors for the event was the Nestle Lanka PLC under the commercial brand of Nestomalt and the media sponsor was the Rupavahini Channel.
