NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS – 2016 AT SFHQ (WANNI)
Dawn of the 08th April 2016 Sun brought New Year splendour to the Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) with a background of Sinhala Hindu New Year traditions and customs. Two domesticities, one reflected a traditional Sinhala household and the other reflected a traditional Tamil household in a village surrounding with a Hindu temple, conventional coffee shop, had enchanted the gathering by implying Sinhala Hindu New Year traditional customaries. \r\n\r\nThe celebrations started with a cross- country run and bicycle race in the morning. The winner of the bicyck race was S/327816 Pvt Wijepala PPSP -1 MIR and S/100890 Sig men Harsha kumara KNC - 4 SLSC was the winner of foot cycle race. The Commander Security Force (Wanni) Major General MHSB Perera RWP RSP USP ndu psc who graced the occasion as the chief guest was welcomed with a group of traditional Kandyan Dancers and a group of Tamil Dancers. \r\n\r\nWith the invitation of the Headman of the village the Commander visited the village and he was treated according to Sinhala and Hindu customs at respective households while all the traditional customaries were being done. Prof. Ajith Pelawaththa and Prof. Deepika Udayakanthi the lectures of the University of rajarata illustrated each and every rituals alike facing the specified direction, lighting the hearth to prepare the traditional kiribath, boiling milk in a new earthen pot and allowed to boil over, symbolising prosperity, the hath maluwa with seven different flavours which is considered a delicacy, is a speciality dish prepared during Avurdu and other festive sweetmeats are generally made in advance to serve visitors and send to neighbours as a sign of goodwill, done in these households. \r\nThe event was rich with the variety of New Year games such as Pillow Fighting, Climbing the Greasy Pole, Tug-Of-War, Kana Mutti Bindeema, Placing the eye on the Elephant, Coconut Scrapping, Lime on Spoon, Weaving Coconut Cadjans, Fancy Dress Parade and Beauty Queen Contest. The New Year Prince and the Princess were S/430579 L/cpl Rathnayake RMS 11 GW and S/ 89802 Rec Peris KAIP - 4 SLAWC All the winners of the games were offered with valuable gifts and the preschool children of Kovil Kulam Pre-School were also given a packet of gift by the Commander. All General Officers Commanding, Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers , Senior Officers and Officers of Security Force (Wanni) and a large number of other ranks and their family members witnessed the celebrations.\r\n
