Following the capsizing of the vessel MSC ELSA 3 in Indian territorial waters, the Maritime Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) requested a shoreline survey and cleanup operation in the affected areas. In response, a special beach cleaning programme was conducted along the Mannar coastal belt to mitigate environmental damage caused by debris and oil spill residues.
On the instructions of the Commander, Security Forces (Wanni), and under the direction of the Commander, 54 Infantry Division, the 543 Infantry Brigade launched a beach cleaning campaign. A total of 01 x 110 troops from the 4th Battalion, Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, participated in the operation from 13 to 17 June 2025, focusing on the removal of plastic waste, ship debris, and oil-contaminated materials that had washed ashore.
The campaign, jointly organised by the Sri Lanka Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Environment Protection Authority concentrated on the shoreline stretches from Southbar to Talaimannar south. This proactive initiative not only contributed to restoring the cleanliness and safety of the beach, but also aimed to protect marine life and preserve the sensitive coastal ecosystem for future generations.
