MAJOR GENERAL G S K PERERA RSP NDC ASSUMES COMMAND OF 54 INFANTRY DIVISION IN SOLEMN CEREMONY

In a time-honored military ceremony steeped in tradition, Major General G S K Perera RSP ndc formally assumed duties as the new General Officer Commanding of the 54 Infantry Division. The event unfolded on Tuesday, 31 March 2026, at the Division Headquarters in Thaladi, Mannar, marking a seamless transition of leadership within this vital North Western formation of the Sri Lanka Army.

Upon his arrival, Major General Perera adhered to established military customs by reviewing the Guard Turnout, a crisp display of regimental precision that underscored the Division's unwavering readiness. The proceedings commenced with the incoming GOC paying solemn tribute to the fallen War Heroes at the memorial monument within the headquarters precincts, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices that forged the Division's legacy.

In a gesture of respect blending military duty with cultural reverence, Major General Perera then proceeded to the Manu Vehera Temple on the camp premises, where he offered floral tributes. This act symbolised the harmonious integration of spiritual values into the ethos of military service.

Entering his new office amid multi-faith blessings from Buddhist, Catholic, Islamic, and Hindu clergy, Major General Perera affixed his signature to the official document, formally accepting the mantle of command. The presence of these religious leaders highlighted the Sri Lanka Army's commitment to inclusivity and unity across diverse faiths.

The GOC then posed for a commemorative group photograph with senior officers and the dedicated cadre serving at Division Headquarters. To etch the occasion into the Division's enduring timeline, he planted a sapling before the 54 Infantry Division Office Complex, a symbolic nod to growth, resilience, and the long-term stewardship of the land under his charge.

Addressing the assembled officers and other ranks, Major General Perera outlined his vision for the Division, emphasising relentless commitment, ironclad discipline, and operational excellence. His words galvanised the ranks, fostering a renewed sense of purpose. The address concluded with a shared tea session, promoting camaraderie across all levels in the true spirit of the Division.

The day progressed with Major General Perera receiving a detailed briefing from the Colonel General Staff and the Senior Intelligence Officer of the 54 Infantry Division, equipping him with a comprehensive operational overview. He capped the inauguration by joining officers for lunch at the Officers' Mess, reinforcing bonds of leadership and mutual resolve.

The ceremony drew participation from the commanders of the 541, 542, and 543 Infantry Brigades, alongside senior officers, officers, and other ranks collectively witnessing the dawn of a new chapter in the Division's storied history.
