Deputy Defence Minister, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), visited the inundated areas along with the Commander of the Army and Commander Security Force (Wanni) to observe the prevailing adverse weather condition in Mannar on 27 November 2024.
Major General J P C Peiris RWP RSP ndc, the Commander Security Froce (Wanni), attended the coordinating conference chaired by Deputy Defence Minister Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), at the Mannar District Secretariat held to address issues concerning the displaced people due to the flood situation caused by adverse weather condition in the area. Hon. Governor, NagalingamVethanayahan, Northern Province, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Commander of the Army, Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera RSP USP ndu psc, Commander of the Navy, Major General Rohan Rajapaksa RSP, General Officer Commanding 54 Infantry Division, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Thilak C Danapala, North Provincial and the District Secretary of Mannar Mr.K.Kanakeshwaran presided the conference.
The discussion focused on critical issues pertinent to the affected areas. Paramount among these concerns was ensuring the provision of essential sustenance for the displaced people, including adequate food supplies. Moreover, efforts were directed towards the swift restoration of power and communication services, pivotal for maintaining connectivity and coordinating relief efforts effectively.
Following the conference, the attendees visited the locations where displaced individuals were temporarily housed, including Mother Theresa School, Selvernagar Kovil and Thalpadu Church in Mannar area which sheltered 132 families.
The Senior Officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force, Police officials and government representatives attended for the coordinating conference.
