THE BASIC ENGLISH COURSE FOR OTHER RANKS CONCLUDES SUCCESSFULLY

The Basic English Course conducted by Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) concluded successfully on 19 July 2018 by awarding certificates for 47 students. The course was conducted from 02 April 2018 to 19 July 2018 with the close supervision and guidance of the Commander Security Force (Wanni), Major General Kumudu Perera RWP RSP VSV USP ndu.

The aim of conducting the course is to understand the basic language requirement in military situations, empower the knowledge of grammar for effective communication and upgrade reading, writing, listening and speaking skills of Other Ranks under different formations of Security Force (Wanni) Area of Responsibility.

In existing professional and social condition, Sri Lanka Army is standing as a reputed government organization. Communication is playing a vital role in this organisation in achieving that reputation among other public and private sectors in Sri Lanka. As a result of that English has currently become an essential language since it is a global one of communicating in both military and civil setup in world wide.

Therefore, in view of the Commander Security Force (Wanni) Major General Kumudu Perera RWP RSP VSV USP ndu, the officials responsible for training in Wanni Headquarters initiated to commence a Basic English Course for Other Ranks to enhance the knowledge of English and to make them aware on basic requirement of English for their daily duty routine.

This course was basically designed for lower intermediate-to-intermediate level to improve the speaking and writing skills in content-based situations with sufficient inputs to upgrade the other language skills such as listening and reading.The course was conducted for three months of period by taking usually eight hours of teaching per day. Students were assessed at the end of this short term English Language package by conducting a final assessment test, speaking test and a presentation based on language aspect.

All students were engaged in class room assignments, presentations, discussions, narrating short stories, public speeches and various kinds of language related activities enthusiastically.The final examination was taken place at the end of the academic sessions and students were evaluated under Work grade, Presentations and Written test.

After considering the marks in three different aspects (Work Grade, Presentation and Written Test), Private Dunukewala D U from 17 (V) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment became the first in order of merit of the course. The second place was obtained by Lance Corporal Bandara E M T D from 24 battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry while third place was obtained by Sargent Samarathunga D K H D K from 2 Sri Lanka Corp of Military Police.

The closing ceremony was comprised with a talent show which exhibited remarkable skills of course students through a Moral Drama, timely important speech on Harmful Impact of Drug Trafficking and Addiction of military personals in Sri Lanka Army and two colorful dancing items.

The closing ceremony and certificate awarding was graced by the Brigadier General Staff in Security Force Headquarters (Wanni), Brigadier Kumar Jayapathirana RSP as the chief guest. Senior Officers, Officers, Senior Non Commissioned Officers and large number of Other Ranks participated in the event.
