THE BASIC ENGLISH COURSE FOR OFFICERS CONCLUDES SUCCESSFULLY

The Basic English Course conducted by Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) was concluded successfully on 19 March 2019 by awarding certificates for 19 students. The course was conducted from 13 February 2019 to 19 March 2019 with the close supervision and guidance of the Commander Security Force (Wanni), Major General Kumudu Perera RWP RSP VSV USP ndu.

In existing professional and social circumstances, Sri Lanka Army is standing as a reputed professional government organization. Communication is playing a vital role in this organisation in achieving that reputation among other public and private sectors in Sri Lanka. As a result of that English has currently become an essential language since it is a global one of communicating in both military and civil setup in world wide.

In that context, the course was designed to make aware the basic language requirement in military situations, empower the knowledge of grammar for effective communication and upgrade reading, writing, listening and speaking skills of Officers under different formations of Security Force (Wanni) Area of Responsibility.

As per the direct supervision of Commander Security Force (Wanni) Major General Kumudu Perera RWP RSP VSV USP ndu, the officials responsible for training in Wanni Headquarters conducted this Basic English Course for Officers to enhance the knowledge of English and to make them aware on basic requirement of English for their daily duty routine.

This course was basically intended for lower intermediate-to-intermediate level to improve the speaking and writing skills in content-based situations with sufficient inputs to upgrade the other language skills such as listening and reading. The course was conducted for a month of period by taking usually eight hours of teaching per day. Students were assessed at the end of this short term English Language package conducting a final assessment test, speaking test and a presentation based on improving the language competencies.

All students were engaged in class room assignments, presentations, discussions, narrating short stories, public speeches, debates and various kinds of language related activities enthusiastically.The final examination was taken place at the end of the academic sessions and students were evaluated under Assignments, Presentations and Written test.

After considering the overall marks obtained by student officers in three different assessments (Assignments, Presentations and Written Tests), Captain D M L M Bandara from 2 Battalion of Mechanized Infantry Regiment became the first in order of merit of the course. The second place was obtained by Second Lieutenant K V R T Katuwagala from 7 Battalion of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment while third place was obtained by Second Lieutenant H M K S Bandara from 5 (V) Battalion of Sri Lanka Light Infantry Regiment.

The closing ceremony and certificate awarding was graced by the Colonel General Staff in Security Force Headquarters (Wanni), Colonel Anil Peiris RSP USP psc as the chief guest. Senior Officers and Officers of Headquarters Security Force (Wanni) participated in the event.
