Periyamadu tank in Mannar District was overflowing due to the prevailing weather condition in the country and 413 cattle were drown and trapped in the tank side in overspill flood water. Those cattle were rescued by Armed Forces and Department of Disaster Management Centre with the support of villagers living in the area.
The rescue operation was conducted by troops to assist the villagers in order to save lives of cattle in Periyamadu tank area as direction given by the Comd Security Force (Wanni) Maj Gen Priyantha Perera RWP RSP ndu and General Officer Commanding 65 Infantry Division Major General DMT Dissanayaka RSP USP with the supervision of Commander 652 Infantry Brigade Brigadier HMU Herath RWP RSP USP psc and Commander 653 Infantry Brigade Brigadier JMSGB Jayamaha RWP RSP USP. 300 Cattle were rescued after searching the tank side by the 24 Sri Lanka Light Infantry troops ( SLLI ) and official of the Disaster Management Centre. 10 SLLI troops carried out the operation under the guidance of their Commanding Officer. During the onward search 110 cattle that trapped at Catchment area of Periyamdu tank were rescued by the troops guided by the Commanding Officer 24 SLLI and the Commanding Officer 24 Gajaba Regiment. Moreover Diving troops of 3 Commando Regiment deployed two boats and able to rescue cattle under the directions of Commander 653 Infantry Brigade and it is observed that 12 carcasses of cattle have scattered in the affected area. These rescue missions were conducted on 4 and 5 December 2020.
