On 27th November 2024, the Alaikalla Poddakulam tank bund at Nawatkulam suffered significant damage due to adverse weather condition leading to a partialy collapse. This posed a severe threat to the surrounding community, endangering both residential properties and agricultural lands. Responding swiftly to the crisis, with the direction of Major General J P C Peiris RWP RSP ndc, Commander Security Force (W) and with the guidance of Major General Nishantha Muthumala USP psc, General Officer Commanding 56 Infantry Division in collaboration with the 563 Infantry Brigade led by Brigadier Y M S C B Jayathilake RSP USP, initiated immediate repair efforts. Under the direct supervision of the Commanding Officer of the 7th Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, troops joined hands with local villagers to mitigate the disaster.
The troops, supported by the community, worked tirelessly to stabilize the damaged bund using sandbags effectively preventing further erosion and potential flooding. This prompt and coordinated effort highlights the strong civil-military cooperation and the Sri Lanka Army’s commitment to safeguarding communities during emergencies.
