65 INFANTRY DIVISION TROOPS PROVIDED LUNCH PACKETS FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES IN AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY IN CELEBRATION OF THAI PONGAL DAY

The Pongal harvest festival, popularly known as Thai Pongal, is celebrated in the first four days of the month of Thai in the Tamil-Hindu calendar. Traditionally, it is the festival of farmers who depend on Mother Earth, the sun, rain, other natural elements and cows and buffaloes for a bountiful harvest of their staple food, rice.

However, the COVID -19 pandemic has made a huge impact on almost every sector of the Area of Responsibility such as agriculture and livestock, welfare, etc. Therefore, troops serving the 65 Infantry Division area under the guidance of the General Officer Commanding, Major General Anil Samarasiri gave away 250 hot lunch packs among needy families in 65 Division Area of Responsibility on account of Thai Pongal day (14).

General Officer Commanding 65 Infantry Division, conscious of difficulties being faced by the general public due to the prevailing COVID -19 pandemic wanted the troops to launch this project on this sacred day. Troops of 651, 652 and 653 Brigades under the supervision of respective commanders delivered those cooked meal packets to the most deserving categories.

The general public has highly appreciated and blessed by their gods towards the contribution of the Army troops to the celebration of the holy festival.
