The festival of Thai Pongal is celebrated by Hindus around the world, and it is one of the most festive and traditional celebrations, celebrated by Hindus in Sri Lanka together with their fellow-believers in the South Asia. Thai Pongal is essentially a harvest festival of sorts, dedicated to Mother Nature and her elements which farmers depend on for a bountiful harvest of their crop – rice. Rice is the staple in Sri Lanka and therefore a festival occurs to celebrate the first harvest.
According to the direction of General Officer Commanding of 65 Infantry Division Major General K A Samarasiri RWP RSP USP psc and Under the supervision of Commanders of 651,652 Infantry Brigades troopps of 10 Sri Lanka Light Infantry ,19 Sri Lanka Light Infantry and 17 (V) Sri Lanka Light Infantry conducted a Shramadana Campaigns in several Kovils in the 65 Infantry Division Area Of Responsibility on 13th Jan 2022 as a helping hand and building reconciliation efforts with the society. The people of the area very much appreciated the service and following Kovilsbeen benefited. Mulankavil Vishnu Kovil , Shivan Hindu Kovil and Palinagar Kutti Pulleyar Kovil, further the MOH office Premises too cleaned up simultaneously prior to the Thai Pongal festival.
