Under the guidance of the General Officer Commanding, 59 Infantry Division, a comprehensive lecture on disaster management was successfully conducted on 28 May 2026 at the 59 Infantry Division Headquarters.
The session was delivered by Mr. C Kokularaj, Deputy Chairman of the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) – Mullaitivu, with the participation of 30 officers and 250 Other Ranks. The lecture focused on key aspects of disaster management, including legal frameworks for relief operations and the significance of irrigation systems in the Mullaitivu District.
During the session, participants were provided with in-depth knowledge of disaster response strategies, guided by the provisions of the Disaster Management Act No. 24 of 2005. Emphasis was placed on coordinated relief efforts led by the Disaster Management Centre in collaboration with local authorities. Key areas discussed included legal provisions for rapid response, effective resource allocation, and efficient inter-agency coordination during emergencies.
Special attention was also given to the irrigation systems in the Mullaitivu area, highlighting their critical role in sustaining local agriculture. The discussion underscored the importance of maintaining resilient irrigation infrastructure to mitigate the adverse effects of floods and droughts.
This initiative significantly enhanced the awareness and preparedness of troops for disaster response operations. It reflects the continued commitment of the Sri Lanka Army to strengthen operational readiness and actively contribute to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts, particularly in vulnerable regions.
