Around 1820 hrs on 25 May 2024, a passenger train traveling from Kankasanthurei to Anuradhapura tragically collided with a herd of wild Elephants, causing significant disruption and endangering animal lives. In response to this critical situation, two dedicated teams from the 561 Infantry Brigade and the 16th Sri Lanka Singha Regiment swiftly mobilized under the direction of the Major General S Kasthurimudali RSP ndc psc, General Officer Commanding of the 56 Infantry Division and supervised by Colonel RSC Dissanayake RSP Overlooking Brigade Commander of the 561 Infantry Brigade.
These teams, working alongside the Department of Wildlife Officers and Railway Officers launched an immediate rescue mission. Their primary focus was ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the train passengers, providing necessary assistance and stabilizing the situation.
Simultaneously, the Wildlife officers assessed the condition of the elephants, one elephant was death and other baby elephant injured. Ensuring that the injured animals received prompt medical attention and care. This collaborative effort highlighted the seamless coordination between the military and wildlife officials in responding to such emergencies.
The mission didn't stop at rescue operations. To restore normalcy, the teams worked tirelessly to clear debris and repair the damaged railway tracks. Their relentless efforts, performed nearly 10hrs, ensured the swift normalization of the railway route between Anuradhapura and Kankasanthurei, minimizing disruption to this transportation link.
This incident showcases the exemplary dedication and efficiency of armed forces, wildlife officials and railway officers.
