54 Infantry Division Intelligence troops in combination with 8 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment recovered 753 kilograms of Turmeric haul in Savaripuram (Silavatura), Mannar at 2330 hr on 23 June 2021. The 54 Infantry Division Intelligence troops and Quick Reaction Team of 8 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment swiftly reached the location and recovered the Turmeric haul, believed to be smuggled from India. The market value of the bulk is approximately Rs 4.518 Million Rupees. No suspects have been arrested and the recovered Turmeric haul has been handed over to the Silawaturai Police station for further investigations.
Under the direction of the Commander of the Army and the Commander Security Forces Wanni, 54 Infantry Division have been very active in curbing illegal activities in the Mannar District specially deterring the smuggling of Kerala Cannabis and turmeric from India. Since June last year, the 54 Infantry Division under the guidance of present General Officer Commanding has taken into custody smuggled Kerala Cannabis, Turmeric and Sand Mining activities of over 241 Million in market value. The information gathering, operational direction and swift action by the troops are the keys to recent successes achieved by the 54 Infantry Division in Mannar District.
