54 Infantry Division Intelligence troops in combination with 7th Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment recovered 672 kilograms of Turmeric haul in Periyakadei Shore, Mannar at 0245 hr on 08 July 2021. 54 Infantry Division Intelligence troops and Quick Reaction Team of 7th Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment swiftly reached the location and recovered the Turmeric haul, believed to be smuggled from India.
The Turmeric haul has been brought to Periyakadei Shore by three boats and while arresting haul were ready to transport by Demo Batta lorry. The market value of the bulk is approximately Rs 4.032 Million rupees. No suspects have been arrested and the recovered Turmeric haul, vehicle and three boats and two boat engines have been handed over to the Mannar Police station for further investigations.
Under the direction of the Commander of the Army and the Commander Security Forces Wanni, 54 Infantry Division have been very active in curbing illegal activities in the Mannar District specially deterring the smuggling of Kerala Cannabis and turmeric from India.
Since June last year, the 54 Infantry Division under the guidance of present General Officer Commanding has taken into custody smuggled Kerala Cannabis, Turmeric and Sand Mining activities of over 245 Million in market value. The information gathering, operational direction and swift action by the troops are the keys to recent successes achieved by the 54 Infantry Division in Mannar District.
