On information received, 54 Infantry Division Intelligence troops tracked down and recovered 170 kilograms of Kerala Cannabis haul in Pallikuda, Poonenyn at 0100 hr on 20 April 2021. Initially the information was received to 54 Infantry Division Intelligence troops that a haul of Kerala Cannabis would be smuggled from India in fishing boats to Vidathalathivu shore, Mannar. However, the smugglers kept changing their landing site and finally the information received that the landing of the boats would take place in Pallikuda, Poonenyn. 54 Infantry Division Intelligence troops swiftly reached the location and recovered the haul of 86 packs of Kerala Cannabis with market value of approximately Rs 55.6725 Million rupees. No suspects have been arrested and the recovered Kerala Cannabis has been handed over to the Kilinochchi STF for further investigations.
Under the direction of the Commander of the Army and the Commander Security Forces Wanni, 54 Infantry Division have been very active in curbing illegal activities in the Mannar District specially deterring the smuggling of Kerala Cannabis and turmeric from India. Since June last year, the 54 Infantry Division under the guidance of present General Officer Commanding has taken into custody smuggled Kerala Cannabis and turmeric of over 240.6725 Million in market value. The information gathering, operational direction and swift action by the troops are the keys to recent successes achieved by the 54 Infantry Division in Mannar District.
