54 INFANTRY DIVISION TROOPS APPREHEND A LARGE HAUL OF TURMERIC IN NEW YEAR EVE

541 Infantry Brigade under 54 Infantry Division has arrested 1989 kilograms of Illegal Raw Turmeric with five suspects at around 2030 hours on 13 April 2021 while they were trying to transport the turmeric haul by a Bolero Cab via Muddanpiddi Road Block established by 12 (V) SLA troops in Jaffna Mannar road (A 32). The Raw Turmeric haul is of a market value of approximately 11.934 Million rupees and believed to have been smuggled from India.

The arrested turmeric and suspects have been handed over to the Illupukadawai police station for further investigations.

Troops under command to 54 Infantry Division, have been very active in curbing illegal activities in the Mannar District specially deterring the smuggling of Turmeric and Kerala Cannabis and from India. Since June last year, the 54 Infantry Division under the guidance of General Officer Commanding, Major General A A I J Bandara RWP RSP USP ndu, has taken into custody smuggled Kerala Cannabis and turmeric of over 225 Million in market value. Acting under the direction of the Commander of the Army and Commander Security Forces Wanni, the information gathering, operational direction and swift action by the troops are the keys to recent successes achieved by the 54 Infantry Division in Mannar District.
