HISTORY
This Brigade has been established on 22 March 2009 and deployed at Chalai area end of the humanitarian operation as the 554 Brigade under command to the 55 Division. At the beginning Brigade Commander was Col GWDK Jayathilake and there were 02 x Offrs and 08 x NCOs as the Brigade Staff. Initially Brigade consist with 3 x Bns, namely 4 SLLI, 8 SLSR and 29 SLNG. Few months later on 10 June 2009, 554 Brigade was redeployed at GR 839707 (1:50000 Iranamadu Map) in Suthanthirapuram area. As per the direction issued by the AHQ, 554 Brigade was renamed as 683 Brigade on 08 July 2009 and it was under command to the Task Force 8. After few days on 12 July 2009, 683 Brigade has under command to 68 Division.
During the period of the Col MWAA Wijesooriya RSP as the Brigade Commander, 683 Brigade has redeployed in newly constructed Brigade Headquarters at Udayarkattu North on 31 July 2011. As per the direction issued by the AHQ 683 Brigade was renamed as 681 Infantry Brigade on 02 March 2020. As of now 681 Infantry Brigade consist of 2 x Bns, namely 6 GW and 9 SLNG by covering area of responsibility 174 Sq kms.
At present 681 Infantry Brigade carries out duties to uplift the living standards of the people and assist to maintain law and order in the area. Presently 681 Infantry Brigade Commanding by Brigadier S Wijesiriwardane RWP RSP.
