History of Corps of Engineer Service

Year 2011

♦ S/751999 L/Cpl Bandara MVGCS who competed under 52 weight class at Clifford Boxing Tournament won the First Place. 2500 Other Ranks were recruited under the militarized scheme, within a very short period of time from 15 February 2011 to 15 March 2011 , in order to carry out constructions at Akuregoda Defence Headquarters Complex Construction Project.
♦ S/751999 L/Cpl Bandara MVGCS won the second place at the National Boxing Championship under fly weight 52kg class. He also won the gold medal awarded to the Best Boxer at Army Boxing Championship - 2011 held on 23 June 2011. The Corps of Engineer Services Volleyball Team won the Army Inter Regiment B - division championship for the second time in the History.
♦ The Corps of Engineer Services won the Championship of Army Inter Regiment Billiards and Snooker Championship for the second time. The Billiards Singles Championship was won by Staff Sergeant Chandrasiri WAG and Snooker Singles Championship was won by Maj (QM) WM Chandradasa CES and Staff Sergeant Chandrasiri WAG became the runners up.
♦ The Corp's Kabaddi Team won the Army Inter Regiment Kabaddi Championship -2011 on 17 November 2011, for the first time in the History.
♦ The Corp's Hockey team won the Inter Regiment Hokey Championship -2011 for the first time in the History.
♦ The Centre Commandant of Corps of Engineer Services, Colonel JDI Rodrigo USP Lsc relinquished his appointment.
♦ Col PSM Perera Lsc assumed duties as the Centre Commandant of Corps of Engineer Services on 24 November 2011.

Year 2012

♦ S/ 750941 Staff Sergeant Pushpakumara KMR who was the first Drill Instructor of Corps of Engineer Services to follow the Drill Instructor Course in England returned back to Sri Lanka on 18 February 2012.
♦ The Corps of Engineer won the first place in the "Discus Throw" event at the Army Inter Regiment Novices Athletic Meet.
♦ The First Place of the Buddha Rashmi National Wesak Lantern Competition was won by Sergeant Major Sanjeewa NHS and his team representing the Corps of Engineer Services. A Bolero cab was awarded as the first price. Further the Wesak Lanterns presented by the 2 ESR, 3 ESR, 7 ESR (V) and GE Office (DLA) won the first places in Vesak Lantern competitions held Island wide.
♦ In order to appreciate the talents of the winners of Vesak Lantern Competitions, the Col Comdt of Corps of Engineer Services, Maj Gen EMM Ambanpola awarded certificates of recognition to all the members of winning teams on 25 July 2012.
♦ In recognition of his skills, Sergeant Major Sanjeewa NHS was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer I by the Colonel Commandant CES.
♦ Woman Sapper Ayomi Perera of Corps of Engineer Services won the First Place of Ranaviru Real Star Mission II reality show and she was awarded with Luxury house, furniture ad household equipment worth Rs 17 million. The new house was handed over to Ayomi Perera by Mrs Ayoma Rajapaksa, the Hon President of MOD Seva Vanitha Unit.
♦ The CES Information Technology Unit, which was established as a concept of Maj Gen EMM Ambanpola USP, the Colonel Commandant of Corps of Engineer Services was declared open on 12.07.2012.
♦ For the third time, the Corps won the Inter Regiment Billiards and Snooker Championship -2012.
♦ Also for the first time in the Army History, the Billiards and Snooker Singles Championships were won by the same Other Rank, S/751840 Cpl Susantha Wickrema SG of Corps of Engineer Services. In honour of that achievement he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant by Colonel Commandant Corps of Engineer Services.
♦ The 16 ESR was established in Mullaitivu Area and Maj KL Munasinghe CES was appointed as the first Officiating Commanding Officer.

Year 2013

♦ S/751282 Sgt Wilson MGTK was selected to follow the Drill Instructor Course 88 held in Pakistan from 07.01.2013 to 16.02.2013 and he is the first Drill Instructor of Corps of Engineer Services to follow the Drill Instructor Course in Pakistan. For the second time, the Vesak Lantern presented by the Corps of Engineer Services won the first place at the Buddha Rashmi National Vesak Lantern Competition -2013. WOI Sanjeewa and his team was awarded with certificates of appreciation on 24 May 2013 by Maj Gen EMM Ambanpola , the Colonel Commandant Corps of Engineer Services. The Tata Ace Mini Truck received as the First Price was handed over to the Colonel Commandant CES.
♦ S/750330 WO II Nilantha JAT participated in Basic Volleyball Coaches' Course in Bangkok, Thailand.He was the first person of the Corps of Engineer Services to follow a Volleyball Coaches' course in a foreign country.
♦ The first ever Five Storied WOs' and Sergeants' Mess of the Sri lanka Army was built at Regimental Headquarters of Corps of Engineer Services, Panagoda with the assistance of all CES Regiments .The Regimental Sergeant Major WOI RDNP Karunadasa USP coordinated the material supply and Lt AMNC Attanayake CES performed duties as the Site Engineer. The new building was declared open on 26 December 2013 by Maj Gen EMM Ambanpola USP, the Colonel Commandant Corps of Engineer Services.

Year 2014

♦ For the first time in the Corps' history a "General Engineer Platoon" consisting of a CES Officer and 31 CES Other Ranks departed for Sudan to proceed with a United Nation Peacekeeping Mission on 05 May 2014.
♦ On 24 April 2014 ,S/10S00242 Spr Pushpakumara KMPC of 10th Engineer Services Regiment and three other soldiers of 3 Gemunu Watch rescued two children who were drowning in the Nilwala River after being thrown into the river by their farther. Certificates of commendation were awarded to them by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General RM Daya Ratnayake, WWV, RWP, RSP, USP, ndu, psc on 30 April 2014 for the exceptional bravery and Spr Pushpakumara KMPC was promoted to the rank of Lance Coporal.
♦ For the 3rd consecutive time in the CES History, the Wesak Lantern created and displayed by WO I NHS Sanjeewa and his team at the Buddha Rashmi National Wesak Zone won the First Place. The Tata Ace Mini Truck received by the winning team as the First Price was handed over to the Corps of Engineer Services.
♦ Maj General EMM Ambanpola USP was appointed as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army with effect from 09 May 2014, in addition to his present appointments as the Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Engineer Services and the Director General (Projects). In the history of Corps of Engineer Services Maj Gen EMM Ambanpola is the first Senior Officer of the Corps who was appointed to this prestigious appointment.

♦ The Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General RMD Ratnayake WWV RWP RSP USP ndu psc made his first visit to the Corps of Engineer Services Regimental Headquarters on 26 June 2014 after he took office.The Commander of the Army was received by the Colonel Commandant CES Major General EM Mahinda Ambanpola USP. Nearly 3000, Officers and other ranks in the Corps of Engineer Services assembled together at Panagoda CES Regimental Headquarters to listen to the Commander of the Army. In conformity with military formalities, a Guard Turn Out presented Arms to the visiting Commander and a Guard of Honour was accorded in his honour.

♦ On the same occasion, Warrant Officer I NHS Sanjeewa whose artistic talents, related to his creative decorations by way of Vesak Lanterns, Pandol-making and Murals was awarded a cash gift of Rs 500,000 by the Corps of Engineer Services and the Comd of the Army presented the cheque as the Chief Guest.

♦ The Colonel Commandant CES, Major General EMM Ambanpola USP presented a special memento to Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, signifying the importance of his visit to the Regimental Headquarters. In the evening a Dinner Night was held in honour of the visit of the Comd of the Army Lt Gen Daya Ratnayake WWV RWP RSP USP ndu psc . Mrs Damayanthi Rathnayaka also participated in this event.

♦ As per a concept of the Commander of the Army in order to meet the demand of barracks equipments required by the Army and reduce the cost incurred annually on the purchase of those items from private sector producers, a Timber Workshop was established at 4 Engineer Services Regiment premises in Panadura and it was declared open by the Commander of the Army Lt Gen Daya Ratnayake WWV RWP RSP USP ndu psc on 29 July 2014. The Colonel Commandant CES also participated in this event.

♦ Spr Mubeen MM of CES became the runner up of National Snooker Championship 2014. He also won the Six Red Snooker National Championship 2014 and Army Inter Regiment (Novices) Billiards and Snooker Championship.

♦ Corps of Engineers Services won the Inter Regiment Billiards & Snooker Championship - 2014.

♦ The 17 Engineer Services Regiment was raised on 26 August 2014 and established in Diyatalawa in order to carry out Engineer Services under the SFHQ (Central) AOR. Lt Col MNJ Perera assumed duties as the first Commanding Officer of the Regiment on 14 November 2014.

♦ In order to facilitate the administrative tasks of the Engineer Services Regiments those are actively engaged in execution of mega construction projects, under the special approval of the Commander of the Army RMD Ratnayake WWV RWP RSP USP ndu psc , Rs 40 Million was allocated by the Treasury to purchase 20 Tata Ace Trucks, 20 Three-wheelers and 20 Motorbikes to be distributed among CES Regiments and Institutes. On 21 November 2014 the Commander of the Army symbolically handed over 20 Troop Career Trucks and 2 Three-wheelers to the Colonel Comdt CES Maj Gen EMM Ambanpola USP during a simple ceremony held at the AHQ premises.

♦ Maj KDS Lankathilake CES followed the Staff College course at Defence Services Command and Staff College, Batalanda and he was able to secure the Golden Owl Award for the most outstanding performance. Maj KDS Lankathilake psc CES became the 4th CES Officer to pass the Staff College and his name is added to the Army History as the first Officer of a Logistics Unit who received the Golden Owl Award.

♦ Lt Col JKG Sirishantha CES relinquished the appointment of Commanding Officer 3 Engineer Services Regiment on 6 November 2014 and Lt Col NWPSM Perera CES assumed duties as the new Commanding Officer.

♦ As a solution to the scarcity of Officers in the Corps, for the first time in the Corps History , 24 Warrant Officers and Senior Non Commissioned Officers were commissioned as QM (Tech) Officers in the rank of Lieutenant after following a Q Commission course at SLAC Rock House Camp. The Piping Ceremony of the newly Commissioned Officers were held at RHQ CES Panagoda on 23 December 2014 with the participation of their family members. The Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army and the Colonel Commandant CES Maj Gen EM Mahinda Ambanpola USP graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

♦ The new three Storied Other Ranks’ Accommodation Building constructed at the RHQ CES premises in order to improve the accommodation facilities of Other Ranks of RHQ CES and 1 ESR was declared open by the Colonel Commandant CES on the same day.

Year 2015

♦ Corps Day Functions

♦ Col NPK Jayawardhana assumed duties as the first Deputy Centre Commandant of Regimental Headquarters Corps of Engineer Services on 26 Feb 2015.

♦ Considering the importance of supplying subsidized food items to both Army and Civil Personnel in the area, The Welfare Shop that was functioned by the Corps of Engineer Services at the RHQ CES premises was recently relocated in the "ground floor" of the newly constructed Three Storied Shopping Complex that belong to our Corps which is situated facing the High-level Road and it was reopened as the "Creators Welfare Shop" in a new face, solely for the purpose of providing a better welfare service for our troops.

♦ The troops who are serving in the Army establishments within the "area of responsibility" of the Security Force Headquarters (West) such as Kalutara, Gampaha, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Kegalle, Kurunegala and Ratnapura also visit the Panagoda Army Cantonment for their administrative formalities and they are expected to become our regular customers.

♦ The Creators' Welfare Shop was declared opened in a simple ceremony by Major General EMM Ambanpola USP , the Deputy Chief of Staff of the SL Army and the Colonel Commandant CES at the invitation of the CES Centre Commandant Brig PSM Perera Lsc on Friday (10) on the eve of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.

♦ The new welfare shop supplies all food commodities and essentials at concessionary rates and remains open till late in the evening.

♦ The opening event was attended by Brig RM Peramune the Director Engineer Services, Brig Rathnayake Lsc the Project Manager DHQC Project, Brig PSM Perera Lsc the Centre Comdt CES , Colonel NPK Jayawardena the Deputy Centre Commandant CES , Senior Officers, Officers and Other Rankers.

♦ Under the directions of His Excellency the President and the Ministry of Defence, the Sri Lanka Army declared a General Amnesty period from April 2 to April 16 for Officers and Other Ranks who were Absent without Leave from the Sri Lanka Army . The General Amnesty Period was again extended up to 25 April 2015.

♦ Making use of this opportunity total number of 14 CES Officers and 1258 Other Ranks reported to RHQ CES in order to obtain their Legal discharge from the Sri Lanka Army.

♦ Representing the first Emergency Rescue and Relief Contingent of 44 Service Personnel and 4 Civil Medical Consultants dispatched to Nepal to assist the earthquake relief efforts , One Officer and 20 Other Ranks of the Corps of Engineer Services departed for Nepal. Lt LGNU Kumara CES and 2 ORs departed for Nepal on 26 March 2015 with the first team of the Rescue Contingent commanded by Major General MAM Dias RWP RSP USP psc. The rest of the CES troops consisting of 18 CES Other Ranks arrived at Nepal on with the second team of the Contingent on 29 March 2015. During their stay in Nepal , contributing to the relief efforts, they assisted with setting up camps by providing electricity and water supply . Also the CES Troops were able to successfully complete some repair works at “Danya Kuti Wihara” Buddhist Temple in Banepa town that sustained damages from the earthquake.

♦ The New Year Festival organized by the CES Seva Vanitha Branch was held at the 4th Engineer Services Regiment's play ground in Panadura on 22 April 2015 with a participation of a large number of Officers, Other Rankers and their Family Members. The President CES Seva Vanitha Branch Mrs Shirani Ambanpola attended the occasion as the Chief Guest. Maj Gen EMM Ambanpola USP, The Col Comdt CES , Brig RM Peramune LSc , the Director Engineer Services , Brig PSM Perera Lsc the Centre Comdt CES , Other Senior Officers also participated in the New Year Festival.

♦ The event included many varieties of traditional games and fun-making features, adding glamour and interest to the occasion. Valuable gifts were distributed among the winners. Also the children of the CES Officers and Other Rankers who had passed the Year 5 Scholarship and the O/L exam in year 2014 were also awarded with valuable gift packs consisting of stationeries and gift vouchers.

♦ The Hon. President of CES Seva Vanitha Branch Mrs. Shirani Amblanpola and the members of the CES Seva Vanitha Branch visited the mentally handicapped inmates of ward no 06 of Mulleriyawa Hospital on 29 April 2015.

♦ The inmates were provided with Lunch and gift packs were distributed among them.

♦ The Corps of Engineer Services Volleyball Team became the Champions of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force Inter Regiment Volleyball Tournament – 2015 held on 29 May 2015 at Maharagama Youth Centre Indoor Stadium. The CES Volleyball Team become the Champions by defeating the Sri Lanka Light Infantry Volleyball Team who won the championship in 2013 and 2014.Lance Corporal Lahiru DMP of CES became the Best Setter and Lance Corporal Meeshan SM become the Best Player of Championship.

♦ The Wesak Lantern created by WO I NHS Sanjeewa and his team at Colombo Gangarama Buddha Rashmi Wesak Zone, representing the Corps of Engineers Services was declared open for the public on 03 March 2015. The Wesak Lantern displayed by the Corps of Engineer Services at Buddha Rashmi Wesak Zone won the first place for three consecutive years. The CES Wesak Lantern depicting two important events of the Life of the Buddha, the Great Renunciation and the Attaining Enlightenment, has been able to draw a large public attentions at the Vesak Zone. The Wesak Lantern has been mainly made of Coconut Shells. Also Coconut Guinits, Toddy Palm Seeds , Cane and Bo Leaves have been used.

♦ The President of the Corps of Engineer Services Sevavanitha Branch Mrs. Shriyani Ambanpola and the members visited the "Mihindu Seth Medura" the healing home for disabled war heroes on 09 Sep 2015. This event was organized and coordinated by the 7th Engineer Services Regiment.

♦ Also, women soldiers , wives of Other Ranks participated in this event. During the visit the President and members inquired the well-being of the inmates and they were provide with refreshments. The inmates were also provided with gift packs which was followed by an musical entertainment event.

Year 2016

♦ The annual marathon race organized in parallel to the 66th Corps Day Anniversary of Corps of Engineer Services was held on 02 January 2016 at Panagoda Army Cantonment premises. Brig PSM Perera Lsc, the Center Comdt Corps of Engineers Services marked the start of the race by waving the flag.

♦ The Annual War Heroes Commemoration Ceremony and the Pirith Chanting Ceremony was held at the Corps of Engineer Services Regimental Headquarters on 13 January 2016. The Floral tributes were offered by the Senior Officers and Family members of the fallen war heroes and Civil employees who sacrificed their lives during the war. The Deputy Chief of Staff and the Col Comdt CES, Maj Gen EM Mahinda Ambanpola USP graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

♦ The Christian Service organized in parallel to the 66th Anniversary Corps Day of the Corps of Engineer Services was held at Christ the King Church, Pannipitiya. Brig PSM Perera Lsc the Centre Comdt andCol NPK Jayawardhana the Deputy Centre Comdt, Senior Officers and Other Rankers of the Corps of Engineer Services participated in this event on 06.01.2016.

♦ The Islam Religious Ceremony organized in parallel to the 66th Anniversary Corps Day was held at Jumma Mosque in Hanwella on 07.01.2016. Brig PSM Perera Lsc the Centre Comdt CES, Senior Officers and Other Ranks participated in this event.

♦ The Corps of Engineer Services WO's & Sgt's Mess Guests Nights was held at the CES Regimental Centre, Panagoda with the participations of a large number of serving and retired Warrant Officers and Sergeants. Maj Gen EM Mahinda Ambanpola USP, the Deputy Chief of Staff and the Colonel Commandant CES graced the Occasion as the Chief Guest. The Corps' Sergeant Major HGR Bhaddrakumara USP welcomed the Chief Guest and Other Senior Officers, WO I.

♦ The 66th Anniversary Corps Day Celebration of the Corps of Engineer Services was held splendidly at RHQ CES on 11 January 2016, with the participation of large number of Officers and Other Ranks. A Guard of Honor followed by a Ceremonial Parade was accorded to Maj Gen EM Mahinda Ambanpola USP, the Deputy Chief of Staff of Army and the Colonel Commandant CES.

♦ A Series of sports events followed by some spectacular entertainment events and a Band display was held at the sports ground and valuable prices were distributed among the winners.

♦ In the evening a Musical Evening and a Lottery Draw was held with the participations of a large gathering. Maj Gen EM Mahinda Ambanpola USP graced occasion as the Chief Guest. Brig RM Peramune Lsc the Director Engineer Services, Brig KAPJ Rathnayaka Lsc the Project Manager (Mechanical) at Defense Headquarter Complex Construction Project, Brig PSM Perera Lsc the Centre Commandant CES other Senior Officers, Officers, Lady Officers, Other Ranks participated in these events.

♦ Maj Gen EM Mahinda Ambanpola USP relinquished his duties as the Deputy Chief of Staff Sri Lanka Army and the Colonel Commandant CES on 15 February 2016 and retired from the active service in the Sri Lanka Army after 36 years of distinguished military service. A farewell dinner was held in honour of Maj Gen EM Mahinda Ambanpola USP at Corps of Engineer Services Regimental Centre , Panagoda on 16 February 2016.

♦ The Seva Vanitha "Bakmah Ulela" New Year festival organized by the Corps of Engineer Services Seva Vanitha Branch was held at the camp premises of the 4th Engineer Services Regiment, under the patronage of Mrs. Sandhya Peramune, the Hon President of the CES Seva Vanitha Branch. A large gathering of crowd including the members of the CES Seva Vanitha Branch, Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks, civilians and their family members participated in this event.

♦ Marking the World Environment Day - 2016, A Mango Tree was planed at RHQ CES camp premises by Brig PSM Perera Lsc on 03 June 2016.

♦ Brig RM Peramune Lsc relinquished the appointment of Director Engineer Services on 13.10.2016 and Brig KAPJ Ratnayake Lsc assumed the duties as the Director Engineer Services.

♦ Brig RM Peramune Lsc relinquished the appointment of Colonel Commandant of CES on 06.11.2016 and Brig KAPJ Ratnayake Lsc assumed the duties as the Colonel Commandant of CES on 07.11.2016.

♦ Brig PSM Perera Lsc relinquished the appointment of Centre Commandant - CES on 23 December 2016 and Col R Ganegoda psc assumed the duties as the 16th Centre Commandant of CES on 26 December 2016.

♦ Col NPK Jayawardena relinquished the appointment of Deputy Centre Commandant - CES on 27 December 2016.

Year 2017

♦ The 67th Anniversary Corps Day Celebration of the Corps of Engineer Services was held at RHQ CES on 10 January 2017, with the participation of large number of Officers and Other Ranks. The Director Engineer Services and the Col Comdt CES, Brigadier KAPJ Ratnayake Lsc graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The Centre Comdt CES Col R Ganegoda psc, the Col ES & Col Designing and planning, Dte of ES Col P Gunasekara USP Lsc and Other Senior Officers & Officers also participated in this event. The Corps' Sergeant Major WO I HMP Hennayaka USP welcomed the Chief Guest and Other invitees.

♦ The annual CES Officers’ Get together organized in parallel to 67th Anniversary Corps Day Celebrations was held at Officers’ Mess , RHQ CES on 21 January 2017 with the participations of a large number of serving and retired Officers and their spouses. The Director Engineer Services and the Col Comdt CES, Brigadier KAPJ Ratnayake Lsc graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

♦ The medical diagnostic clinic organized by the CES Seva Vanitha Branch in collaboration with Office of the Medical Officer of Health Homagama, under the theme of “Early Detection & Cancer Prevention” was held on 16 February 2017 at Regimental Headquarters, Corps of Engineer Services premises , Panagoda under the patronage of President CES Seva Vanitha Branch Dr. Mrs. Indira Pinnadoowa. Medical tests for diabetes , blood pressure and health screenings for breast cancer and cervical cancer on women between 35 – 50 years of age were performed at the clinic.

♦ Under the monthly activities of CES Seva Vanitha Branch , the breakfast and packs of grocery items were donated for the inmates of the ward no 6 of Mulleriyawa Mental Hospital on 11 March 2017. The CES Sports Excellence Awards 2017 was the first such event in the history of the Corps of Engineer Services to recognize the CES Sports Stars and felicitate those Sportsmen for their outstanding achievements at Defence Services level, National level and International level. 23 Sportsmen who have excelled in Athletics, Badminton, Billiard & Snooker, Body Building, Boxing , Kabaddi, Hockey, Power lifting, Swimming and Volleyball received awards in this event.

♦ Brig PSM Perera Lsc retired on 2017.03.05

♦ The Ceremony was held at Regimental Headquarters of Corps of Engineers Services on 24 March 2017 and Brigadier KAPJ Ratnayake Lsc the Director Engineer Services and Colonel Commandant CES graced the occasion as the Chief guest. Col NPK Jayawardana, Col (A/Q) SFHQ (MLT), Col R Ganegoda psc Centre Commandant RHQCES, Col KMS Kumara Advisor to MOD on Engineer Matters & Project Manager Sports Complex Diyagama, Other Senior Officers, Officers and parents of the prize awadees were also present at this glamorous occasion.

♦ Col KMS Kumara assumed duties as the Deputy Centre Commandant RHQ CES on 03 April 2017.

♦ "The Creators Rhythm Night" Musical Show organized by the Seva Vanitha Branch of Corps of Engineer Services under the patronage of President CES Seva Vanitha Branch , Dr. Mrs. Indira Pinnaduwa was held on 09 April 2017 at Homagama Wilferd Senanayake Ground. The Director Engineer Services & Colonel Commandant Brigadier KAPJ Ratnayake Lsc graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The event was organized as the annual fund raising program of the CES Seva Vanitha Branch.

♦ On the invitation of the High Commission of Sri Lanka in India, a team of CES Tradesmen left for India on 2nd May 2017 in order to put up a Vesak Pandol in New Delhi. The Pandol portrays the story of Angulimala, and an audio clip will be played in Hindi during the display.

♦ The expenditure for transportations of the Pandol and related tools and equipment along with Air tickets for the Work team (1 x 15) have been arranged by the Office of High Commission Sri Lanka in New Delhi. It was nearly 13 x days taken for the erection of the Pandol and will be arranged for the public display ceremonially at 1930 hrs on 15th May 2017 at “Shanthipath” adjacent to the Sri Lanka High Commission, 27, Kautilya Marg, Chankyapuri, New Delhi, with the patronage of Hons High Commissioner Sri Lanka in India. The Pandol will be displayed from 15th May to 21st May 2017 from 1900 hrs to 2200 Hrs.

♦ The ‘Wesak’ pandol erected by the Corps of Engineer Services (CES) to coincide with the Wesak festival, following an initiative of Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India was declared open for public in New Delhi on 15 May.

♦ In addition, over 200 white Vesak lanterns and Vesak buckets will adorn New Delhi for the first time marking this significant event revered by Buddhists worldwide.

♦ The dazzling Pandol erected in New Delhi that depicts the ‘Angulimala’ story is 40 feet in height and illuminated with 15,000 bulbs. A Hindi version of the story is played in the arrangement.

♦ Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and Indian Union State Minister for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju inaugurated the display of the Pandol which will be on display until May 21.

♦ The Wesak Lantern created by WO I NHS Sanjeewa and his team at Colombo Gangarama Buddha Rashmi Wesak Zone, representing the Corps of Engineers Services was declared open for the public on 11 May 2017 and won the 4th place. The CES Wesak Lantern was mainly made of Coconut Eakles and illustrated the Themagula & first alms giving in the Life of the Buddha. It was able to draw a large public attention at the Wesak Zone.

♦ The Combat Convoy Company Construction team consisting of 2 Officers and 63 Other Ranks is scheduled to leave for Mali in June 2017 as the pre-construction team before the Main Contingent to be deployed in MINUSMA (United Nations Multi Dimension Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali).

♦ Maj AK Weerasinghe CES the Officer Commanding - Combat Convoy Company Construction Team, Capt PWGL Prasanna CES and 63 Other Ranks accorded a Ceremonial Parade to Brig KAPJ Ratnayake Lsc, the Director Engineer Services and Colonel Commandant CES on 07 June 2017. Col R Ganegoda psc Centre Commandant CES, Col KMS Kumara Deputy Centre Commandant CES and other Officers participated for this event.

♦ Director General Engineer Services and Col Comdt CES Brig KAPJ Ratnayake Lsc was promoted to the rank of Major General with effect from 01 September 2017. The felicitation Ceremony was organized by the Regimental Centre CES to the newly promoted Major General in grandeur scale following all the norms and customs of the Regiment. The guard turnout and a colourful parade was accorded and subsequently the Col Comdt planted a Mango Tree to commemorate the event. Later Col Comdt attended a Tea Party with ORs and had a lunch in the Officers Mess. In the Officers address Col Comdt stressed the significance of education of Officers and ORs to overcome the challenge in the field of construction. The Centre Comdt and all other Senior Officers participated the event.

Year 2018

♦ The Corps of Engineer Services annual War Heroes Commemoration Ceremony and Pirith preceded by a colorful procession were held at the Corps of Engineer Services Regimental Headquarters on 05 January 2018 under the precedence of Maj Gen K A P J Ratnayake Lsc the Director General Engineer Services and Colonel Commandant CES who participated as the Chief Guest. Floral tributes were offered by the Colonel Commandant, Senior Officers and Family members of the Fallen War Heroes and Civil employees who sacrificed their lives during the war. Valuable gifts packs were presented to the family members of the Fallen War Heroes. The Pirith Ceremony was followed by an Almsgiving for Maha Sangha on Saturday morning (06). The event was attended by large number of Senior Officers, Officers, Other Ranks and Civil Employees.

♦ Corps of Engineer Services celebrated its 68th anniversary in a grand scale on 10 January 2018. A customary guard of honour followed by a colourful parade was accorded to Maj Gen K A P J Ratnayake Lsc, the Director General Engineer Services and Colonel Commandant CES.

♦ A series of Sports events followed by spectacular entertainment and colourful band display were the main attraction of the day.

♦ Col Comdt and all other officers and more than 1000 other ranks enjoyed a All Ranks lunch in the afternoon. Col R Ganegoda psc, the Centre Commandant CES, Col P Gunasekara USP Lsc the Col (Design and Planning) Dte of ES, Col K M S Kumara the Deputy Centre Commandant CES , Senior Officers, Officers, Lady Officers, Other Ranks and Civil Employees participated the Corps Day.

♦ On 11th of January a musical evening and a lottery draw were held for the 68th Corps Day of CES with the participation of large gathering. Maj Gen K A P J Rathnayake Lsc, the Director General Engineer Services and the Colonel Commandant CES graced occasion as the Chief Guest. The Lottery Draw was held under the supervision of the representatives of the National Lotteries Board and valuable prizes were offered to the winners. Col R Ganegoda psc the Centre Commandant CES, Col P Gunasekara USP Lsc the Col (Design and Planning) Dte of ES, Col K M S Kumara the Deputy Centre Commandant CES, other Senior Officers, Officers, and large number of Other Ranks were present in this colorful evening.

♦ The Corps of Engineer Services WOs' & Sgts' Mess “Guest Night” organized in parallel to 68th Anniversary Corps Day Celebrations was held at the CES Regimental Centre, Panagoda on 12 January 2018 with the participation of a large number of serving and retired Warrant Officers and Sergeants. Major General K A P J Ratnayake Lsc , the Director General Engineer Services and the Col Comdt CES graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Col R Ganegoda psc , the Centre Comdt CES , Col P Gunasekara USP Lsc the Col Designing and Planning, Dte of ES, Col K M S Kumara , Deputy Centre Comdt CES, Other Senior Officers & Officers also participated in this event. The Corps' Sergeant Major WO I H A R N Prera welcomed the Chief Guest and Other invitees.

♦ The annual CES Officers’ Get together organized in parallel to 68th Anniversary Corps Day Celebrations was held at Eagles’ Lakeside Banquet and Reception Hall, Attidiya on 14 January 2018 with the participations of a large gathering of serving and retired Officers and their spouses. Major General K A P J Ratnayake Lsc, the Director General Engineer Services and the Col Comdt CES graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

♦ Maj T G S C Thalagahawatta Lsc psc CES was able to secure the 4th order of merit place in the Defence Services Command and Staff College Course No 11 and received his award from State Minister of Defence Hon Ruwan Wijayawardena during the Graduation Ceremony held on 13 December 2017 at the DSCS. His Excellency Maithripala Sirisena the Hon President of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka graced this occasion as the Chief Guest.

♦ Maj T G S C Thalagahawatta Lsc psc CES also won the 4th place in the Logistics Staff Course No – 2 in 2015 and got the opportunity to follow Logistics Staff Course at Army School of Logistics, Pakistan. Maj Gen K A P J Ratnayake Lsc, the Director General Engineer Services and the Colonel Commandant CES extended his best wishes to Maj T G S C Thalagahawatta Lsc psc CES appreciating his achievement.
