History of Corps of Engineer Service

Year 1976

A "Beacon Station" had to be constructed at Kepungoda within three months in connection with the Non-Aligned Summit Conference to be held in Colombo. Since no other Organization was prepared to carry out this task in such a short period the Army was given the task which was completed by this unit on time. The Unit carried out various duties in connection with the Non - Aligned Summit Conference. L/Cpl Dayananda PSP of this Unit represented Sri Lanka at the Indo - Sri Lanka Swimming Meet.

Year 1977

With the formation of the Engineer Group, the Unit which was under Support Group HQ was placed under the operational and administrative Command of Engineer Group HQ. The Unit Establishment was increased to 23 Officers and 376 Other Ranks. The Unit Organization also underwent major changes. The new organization consisted of a Regimental Headquarters and a Directorate with two Works Squadrons and an Electrical and Mechanical Squadron and an Electrical and Mechanical Squadron. Three of the Squadron Commanders and the Adjutant were infantry Officers posted to the Unit on ERE due to the shortage of Officers. Lt Col LCJ Cabraal, SLE, relinquished the appointment as commanding Officer and Lt Col S Wickramasinghe SLE, took over command in November.

Year 1978

The Unit won the Inter Unit Swimming Championship. L/Cpl Dayananda PSP represented Sri Lanka at the Indo Sri Lanka - Bangladesh Triangular Swimming Meet held at Trivandram, India.

Year 1979

The Unit participated for the first time in 29 years in the Armed Forces parade at the Independence Commemoration Celebration. Won Inter Unit Swimming Championship for the 4th time and Inter - Unit Billiards and snooker Championship for the 1st time L/Cpl Dayananda PSP represented Sri Lanka at the Indo - Sri Lanka - Bangladesh Triangular Swimming Meet.

Year 1980

A new Works Service Procedure was introduced and put into practice (AO/03/80) A Model of a life size air craft was designed and built under the direction of Captain S Ganegoda, at Combat Training School, Ampara for the first Commando training course that was held in Sri Lanka.

Year 1981

Lt Col. S. Wickramasinghe relinquished the appointment as CO and Major R. Ekanayake SLE, took - over the Command.

Year 1984

A new GE station was established at Mankulam. 1st GE at this station was Lt SAG Sooriyarachchi.

Year 1985

GE Station at Mankulam was closed down and was established at Vavuniya. 1st GE of this Station was Lt WDG Fernando. The Unit Establishment was increased to 33 officers and 776 ORs. Number of Works Sqns was increased to 3. Unit won the Inter Unit 'B' Division Volleyball Championship.

Year 1986

2 officers and 226 other ranks joined the Unit. Unit won the Inter Unit Swimming Championship. FIBUA Complex for the Sri Lanka Army was designed and constructed at ATS Maduruoya under the direction of Major S Ganegoda.

Year 1987

Officers and 50 Other Ranks joined the Unit. GE Station Trincomalee was reestablished.

Year 1988

Lt Col R Ekanayake, SLE relinquished the appointment of Commanding Officer and Lt Col. N Gunathilake SLE took over the command. A block of 1/2 acre land was bought under cultivation to enrich the Unit funds. Engineers Services Electrical & Mechanical Workshop was re-organized and established with the appointment of new OC Capt PP Atuluwge SLE.

Year 1989

A welfare shop was declared open and an English language Course was started for the Other Ranks after a survey was done to find their basic needs. The Unit Chess Team became Champions in the Army Inter Unit Tournament. Electricians' week and Plumber week were organized independently and activated to eliminate the waste of water and electricity.

Performance evaluation system for soldiers and civilians were introduced and best OR from each rank - Sapper to WO I and the best civilian workman from each GE station were selected for the purpose of awards. Training for Officers and men on all aspects of management was conducted by the Commanding Officer. Unit team was placed 3rd in the Army Inter Unit Combat Shoot, Services Championship.

Year 1990

♦ Organizing and conducting a 3 day Engineer exhibition for the first time in the history of the Regiment.
♦ The creation of two new GE stations at Kandy and Ampara even before the establishment was approved.
♦ Establishment of work Improvement teams (WITs) under Sqn Comd for the progress of the Regiment.
♦ The Regt conducted its Recruit Training Course within Unit premises for the first time.
♦ The construction of a new two storied bldg for RHQ was approved.
♦ The functioning of the Regtl Officers Mess was approved.
♦ A two storied School building was designed and constructed by the Regiment at Panagoda and Diyathalawa.
♦ A two storied Library Bldg was designed and constructed by the Regiment.
♦ Two 0.22 Firing Ranges were designed and constructed by the Regiment at Panagoda and Diyathalawa.
♦ 1991 - Lt Col N Gunathilake was promoted to the rank of Colonel and appointed as the Commandant Regtl Centre/ Chief Engineer (Wks).
♦ Lt Col. M D R Peiris was appointed as the CO of 2 Engineer Services Regt SLE at Anuradhapura.
♦ Approval was received for the new establishment of the Regt of 89 Officers and 1220 ORS.
♦ Two new GE Stations were opened at Minneriya and Boossa.
♦ For several years Col P De S Daluwatte has held the Captaincy of Sri Lanka Army Tennis Team. In recognition of that he was awarded with Army Colours.
♦ In this year Col P De S Daluwatte also participated in the Asian Tennis Tournament held in Indonesia and he was awarded with Colours for that too.
