History of Corps of Engineer Service

Year 2003

♦ The first ever CES Inter Unit Athletic Meet was held on 05 August 2003 at Public Ground, Anuradhapura. The 4th Engineer Services Regiment (V) won the Championship and 2nd Engineer Services Regiment became the Runners Up.
♦ A new Garrison Engineer Office was established in Welikanda and Capt NWPSM Perera CES was appointed as the first Garrison Engineer.

Year 2005

For the first time in the CES history, Six other ranks of the Corps of Engineer Services went to Haiti on a Peacekeeping Mission, under the Second Peacekeeping Battalion reported from the Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment.

Year 2006

♦ 31 Professional Officers were enlisted to the Corps of Engineer Services under the Militarized Civilians Scheme for the first time in the Army History.
♦ Captain GWASB Muhandiramge CES and Six Other Ranks went to Haiti for Peacekeeping Duties under the Additional Battalian reported from Vijayaba Infantry Regiment.
♦ The 6th Engineer Services Regiment (Vol) was established at Malay Street, Colombo on 28 October 2006 and Major P Gunasekara CES was appointed as the first Officiating Commanding Officer.
♦ The 7th Engineer Services Regiment (Vol) was established at Salava, Kosgama on 07 July 2006 and Major NPK Jayawardhana CES was appointed as the first Officiating Commanding Officer.
♦ The 8th Engineer Services Regiment (Vol) was established at Manning Town, Narahenpita on 24 April 2006 and Lt Col K Dissanayake SLE was appointed as the first Commanding Officer.
♦ For the first time in the Corps' History, the under mentioned two Senior Officers were promoted to the rank of Major General. ♦ >> Major General SAG Sooriyarachchi USP.
♦ >> Major General WR Wasanthakumara USP.
♦ For the first time in the Corps' History Maj Gen WR Wasanthakumara USP was appointed as the Commander Logistics Command.
♦ >> Major General WR Wasanthakumara USP.

Year 2008

The three letters "ESR" found in the middle of the Cap Badge and the Collar Badge denoting the name "Engineer Services Regiment" was replaced with the three letters "CES" to represent the new name "Corps of Engineer Services". The new Badges were worn in a official function held on 01 August 2008 ceremonially and the first Cap Badge was presented to Lt Col RAN Perera CES, the Commanding Officer of 1 ESR by Maj Gen SAG Aooriyarachchi USP, the Col Commandant of the Corps of Engineer Services.

Year 2009

♦Major General SAG Sooroiyarachchi USP relinquished the appointment of Colonel Commandant Corps of Engineer Services and Major General WR Wasanthakumara USP assumed duties as the new Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Engineer Services.
♦The 9th and 10th Engineer Services Regiments (Vol) were raised in Hambanthota Area. Maj KSM Kumar CES was appointed as the first Commanding Officer of 9 ESR (V) and Maj UAJPK Amarasinghe CES was appointed as the first Commanding Officer of the 10 ESR (V).
♦On 19 August 2009 , the 14th Engineer Services Regiment (Vol) was raised in Mullaitivu Area and 15th Engineer Services Regiment (Vol) was raised in Kilincochi Area.Maj HMPHK Nawarathne CES was appointed as the first Commanding Officer of 14 ESR (V) and Maj SN Kithulgoda CES was appointed as the first Commanding Officer of 15 ESR (V).
Colonel WM Karunapala Lsc relinquished appointment of Centre Commandant Corps of Engineer Services and Col JDI Rodrigo USP Lsc was appointed as the new Centre Commandant.

Year 2010

♦The Volleyball Team of Corps of Engineer Services won the Inter Regiment Volleyball A- Division's Championship for the first time in the Corps' History.
♦Two Other Ranks of the Corps of Engineer Services left the Island for peacekeeping duties in Lebanon for the first time in the history.
♦Maj Gen WR Wasanthakumara USP laid the cornerstone of the new Welfare Shop Complex at Panagoda on 04 August 2010. On the same day the renovated Billiard & Snooker Room of RHQ CES was declared open by Maj Gen WR Wasanthakumara USP.
♦The 11th Engineer Services Regiment was established on 06 August 2010 and Maj EADK Edirisinghe CES was appointed as the first Commanding Officer.
♦Brigadier EMM Ambanpola USP was appointed as an Additional Director at Urban Development Authority on 12 August 2010. ♦The Second, Third and Sixth place of Army Inter Regiment Cycling Race-2010 was won by Spr Silva KRD, Spr Appuhami HADSR and Spr Thissera HAUN of Corps of Engineer Services respectively.
♦Major General WR Wasanthakumara USP relinquished the appointment of Colonel Commandant Corps of Engineer Services on 27 September 2010.
♦Brigadier EMM Ambanpola USP assumed the duties as the Colonel Commandant Corps of Engineer Services.
♦Brigadier EMM Ambanpola USP was promoted to the rank of Major General.
♦With the special approval of the Army Headquarters a SLNG Battalion consisting 16 Officers and 489 Other Ranks was posted to the Corps of Engineer Services under "unit transfer" and formed 12 Engineer Services Regiment (V) on 10 October 2010. Maj SP Goonapinuwala CES was appointed as the first Commanding Officer.
♦The "Ill Maha Wasanthaya -2010 " , organized by the Corps of Engineer Services was held at Panadura , 4th Engineer Services Regiment's Play Ground on 06 November 2010.
♦The CES Cap Badge wearing ceremony of the Officers and Other Ranks of the 12 ESR (V) who were unit transferred from the Sri Lanka National Guards, was held on 27 November 2010 at the CES Regimental Headquarters, Panagoda.
♦The Inter Regiment Billiards & Snooker Championship - 2010 was won by the Corps of Engineer Services.
