DISTRIBUTION OF DRY RATIONS AND ESSENTIAL ASSISTANCE TO DISASTER-AFFECTED CIVILIANS IN MADHU

Under the guidance and direction of the General Officer Commanding of the 54 Infantry Division, Major General A M C Abeykoon RWP RSP USP ndc, the 542 Infantry Brigade conducted a dry rations and household items distribution programme for civilians affected by the Ditwah Cyclone in the Madhu and Thekkam Grama Niladhari Divisions.

This community welfare initiative was generously supported by a donor residing in Canada, reflecting continued overseas assistance for humanitarian efforts in Sri Lanka.

The programme was held on 28 January 2026 at the Thekkam Grama Niladhari Division Community Hall, where 53 affected families from both Grama Niladhari Divisions received dry ration packs and essential household items. The event was graced by the presence of the General Officer Commanding of the 54 Infantry Division, Major General A M C Abeykoon RWP RSP USP ndc, as the Chief Guest.

The programme was conducted under the supervision of the Commander of the 542 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier A R W C Asurasinghe RWP RSP USP. All organizational arrangements were efficiently carried out by the Commanding Officer of the 4 Gajaba Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel M S S Fernando USP psc, with the assistance of officers and other ranks.

Several civil officials also participated in the event, including the Madhu Divisional Secretary, Mr. R C Amalraj, Assistant Director (Planning) Mr. Supun Priyadharshana, and Thekkam Grama Niladhari, Ms. K Yalani. The programme was coordinated by the Civil Affairs Officer of the 542 Infantry Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel W A N D Jayasundara.
