Cyclone Ditva caused severe flooding across several areas under the Oddusudan Divisional Secretariat, leading to major disruptions in eight Grama Niladhari divisions. Among the affected infrastructure was the Muthiyankattu Kulam Tank in the Muthiyankattu GN Division, where a structural failure in the spillway posed a serious and immediate risk to more than 1,800 families whose primary livelihood depends on agriculture.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Major General K M P S B Kulatunga RSP ndc psc, Commander Security Force Headquarters (Wanni), promptly directed troops to initiate rapid restoration efforts. The operation was conducted under the supervision of Major General M W S Millagala RWP RSP USP Hdmc psc, the General Officer Commanding of the 59 Infantry Division.
Further instructions from the Brigadier A M D B Adhikari RWP RSP psc Commander of the 592 Infantry Brigade ensured precise planning and effective coordination throughout the mission. Under the direct supervision of the Commanding Officer of the 14 (V) Battalion, Gemunu Watch, a contingent of 04 x 110 troops was deployed on 11 December 2025 to stabilize the damaged spillway. The team constructed a protective bund using sandbags to reinforce the weakened section, prevent further erosion, and restore the structural integrity of the tank.
The swift, disciplined, and dedicated efforts of the Army troops not only protected vital water resources but also underscored the Army’s unwavering commitment to assisting communities affected by natural disasters. Their timely intervention ensured the safety and continued livelihoods of the families dependent on the Muthiyankattu Kulam Tank.
