Troops of the 8th Battalion the Gemunu Watch carried out a swift and lifesaving rescue operation in the Kanchanamotai area on 27 November 2025. The team rescued Ms. S. Sivajodi, a 25-year-old pregnant woman who was on the verge of giving birth and trapped inside her home as rising floodwaters reaching nearly four feet cut off access to the residence.
Acting immediately on information provided by the Grama Niladhari of the Marathodai GN Division, a 01×10 rescue team proceeded to the location using a military truck. Despite challenging conditions, the operation was efficiently conducted between 1145 hrs and 1310 hrs, ensuring the victim’s safety throughout the evacuation.
The rescued woman was transported safely to the Divisional Hospital, Nedunkerny, for urgent medical care and was subsequently transferred to the General Hospital, Vavuniya, for further treatment.
The timely response, professionalism, and dedication of the 8th Battalion the Gemunu Watch were instrumental in safeguarding both mother and child during severe flooding in the area.
