large-scale rescue operation was launched by the Sri Lanka Tri-Forces following a severe incident at the Kala Oya Bridge on 27 November 2025, when a passenger bus carrying 69 individuals including the a foreign national , judge of high court Jaffna, a Buddhist monk and 03x kids was swept away by strong floodwaters. The vehicle was dragged off the bridge by powerful currents, forcing the passengers to seek refuge on the roof of a nearby house, where they remained stranded A for several hours.
The rescue mission was initiated under the direction of the Presidential Secretariat, the Commander of the Army, and the Commander Security Forces (Wanni), Major General K M P S B Kulathunga RSP ndc psc, who proceeded to the location and coordinated joint efforts among the Sri Lanka Army, Navy, Air Force, and other relevant authorities. Due to adverse weather conditions, Air Force support was limited during the whole operation.
On 28 November 2025, rescue teams continued operations throughout the day to assist the stranded passengers. Coordinate all the relevant authority and facilitate additional requirement by the Commander Security Force Wanni being the site including:
Despatch of Army ambulances, medical team, and preparation of the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital and Nochchiyagama Regional Hospital
Airlifting of essential supplies including food, drinking water, and life jackets using a drone capable of transporting up to 30 kg
Coordination of Navy boats and other critical rescue assets
On the morning of 29 November 2025, the Sri Lanka Navy launched a renewed rescue effort and successfully evacuated all 69 passengers and five villagers who were trapped by rising floodwaters. One individual, however, succumbed after being admitted to the hospital.
All rescued persons, including the a foreign national , judge of high court Jaffna, a Buddhist monk and 03x kids were subsequently transported to the Nochchiyagama Regional Hospital for medical evaluation and observation.
A total of 9 × 87 Sri Lanka Army troops and 3 × 35 Sri Lanka Navy personnel actively participated in the rescue effort, providing vital support throughout the mission.
The Tri-Forces’ swift action, effective coordination, and unwavering commitment were instrumental in ensuring the safe evacuation of civilians during this life-threatening emergency.
