Mangrove Replanting Programme Conducted to Mark World Mangrove Day in Naruwilkulam Area of Mannar

Commemorating World Mangrove Day, troops of 10 (V) Gemunu Watch, under 541 Infantry Brigade, conducted a mangrove replanting programme in the Naruwilkulam area of Mannar on 28 July 2025. This environment-focused initiative was carried out under the guidance of Commander 54 Infantry Division, Major General E M C P Abeykoon RWP RSP USP ndc, and the supervision of Commander 541 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier I P Jayasinghe RWP. The programme was further supported by the Civil Affairs Officer of 541 Infantry Brigade and the Commanding Officer of 10 (V) Gemunu Watch.

A total of 1,500 mangrove saplings were replanted during the event with the aim of restoring the coastal ecosystem and promoting environmental sustainability in the region.

The event saw the active participation of multiple government and civil organizations including Sri Lanka Police, the Nanattan Divisional Secretariat, the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the Sri Lanka Red Cross (Mannar Branch), and the Sri Lanka Scout Association. In addition, students from the University of Jaffna and Naruwilkulam Tamil Government School also took part in the replanting alongside Army personnel, reinforcing the collaborative spirit of environmental stewardship.

The initiative highlighted the Army’s continued commitment to National Green Efforts and Community engagement in preserving Sri Lanka’s Natural Heritage.
