COMMANDER, SECURITY FORCES HEADQUARTERS (WANNI), COMMENDS TROOPS FOR EXEMPLARY SERVICE DURING CYCLONE DITVA RESPONSE

The impact of Cyclone Ditva caused extensive damage to lives and property across the island, placing severe strain on affected communities. In response, the Sri Lanka Army extended unwavering support through comprehensive rescue, relief and reconstruction operations, earning widespread appreciation from the public.

The Commander, Security Forces Headquarters (Wanni), Major General K M P S B Kulatunga RSP ndc psc, expressed his deep appreciation for the dedication, sacrifice, and professionalism demonstrated by Army personnel and civil staff who assisted the people of the Mannar District during and after the disaster.

In recognition of these commendable efforts, Major General K M P S B Kulatunga RSP ndc psc, visited the 54 Infantry Division on 22 December 2025. Upon arrival, he was accorded a drive-past and warmly received by the General Officer Commanding of the 54 Infantry Division, Major General A M C Abeykoon RWP RSP USP ndc.

Addressing the gathering, the Commander conveyed his sincere gratitude to all ranks and civil employees for their tireless service, emphasizing that their commitment played a vital role in restoring normalcy and supporting the national recovery process. A formal tea reception was held in his honour, attended by Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers of subordinate units, senior officers, commissioned officers, non-commissioned officers, and civil staff. Approximately 30 officers and over 200 troops participated in the event.

Prior to addressing the troops at the Headquarters of the 54 Infantry Division, the Commander inspected the restoration work being carried out on cyclone-damaged sections of the railway line from Isamalathathivu to Thampanekulam, within the Area of Responsibility of the 542 Infantry Brigade.

Following the tea reception, the Commander visited the Sri Lanka Army Recruit Training Centre, Vidathalathivu, to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Ditva. He also inspected the damaged bund of the Sannarkulam Tank located within the premises. During the visit, he held discussions with the Commandant on the impact of the cyclone, ongoing recovery measures, and the operational readiness of the Centre.

During his visit, the Commander personally commended all personnel for their collective efforts, reaffirming the Sri Lanka Army’s enduring commitment to safeguarding the nation and standing shoulder to shoulder with the people during times of crisis. His visit to the 54 Infantry Division served as a significant morale booster, further strengthening the determination and esprit de corps of all ranks.

Thereafter, The Commander, Security Forces (Wanni), met with the Bishop of the Diocese of Mannar, Most Reverend Dr. Anthony Pillai Ganapragasgam, at the Bishop’s Residence in Mannar. During the meeting, the Commander briefed the Bishop on the role of the Sri Lanka Army in assisting communities affected by Cyclone Ditva, highlighting the specific contributions of troops in the Mannar District toward strengthening reconciliation and promoting ethnic and religious harmony. The Bishop commended the Army’s exemplary service in Mannar, acknowledging its vital role in fostering reconciliation and national unity.
