7 SRI LANKA SINHA REGIMENT CONTRIBUTES TO REPAIR OF SAMALANKULAM TANK BUND VAVUNIYA

A major potential disaster was averted in Vavuniya following the swift and coordinated response of the Sri Lanka Army, civil authorities, and local residents after reports emerged of a significant water leak threatening the collapse of the Samalankulam Tank bund.

Upon receiving the alert regarding the increased risk caused by severe water seepage, the General Officer Commanding of the 56 Infantry Division issued immediate directives to initiate urgent stabilization and repair work.

Operational control was promptly established under the close supervision of the Commander, 563 Infantry Brigade. Meticulous planning and on-ground oversight were led by the Brigade Major of the 563 Infantry Brigade, who ensured uninterrupted coordination and monitoring of the repair operations with the supporting battalion troops.

Troops of the 7th Battalion Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment undertook the frontline execution of the mission, deploying a substantial team 02 x 30 personnel with the Commanding Officer personally leading the effort. Their rapid and determined action under challenging conditions played a decisive role in strengthening the weakened embankment.

A notable feature of the operation was the strong inter-agency collaboration. The Disaster Management Centre Vavuniya and the Irrigation Department worked hand in hand with the military, while the active participation of local civilians provided essential support that significantly accelerated the repair process. Their collective efforts were vital in securing the tank bund before any catastrophic breach could occur.

The successful and timely completion of the emergency repairs underscores the unwavering commitment of the 56 Infantry Division, partner agencies, and the community to safeguarding public safety and protecting critical infrastructure.
