59 Infantry Division Leads Successful Coastal Cleaning Campaign In Mullaitivu

In support of the national "Clean Sri Lanka Project" and under the theme “A Clean Environment with the Sri Lanka Army – A Clean Coastline for the Nation”, a large-scale coastal cleaning program was carried out on 29 July 2025 from 0700 to 1200 hours along the Mullaitivu coastline.

This was conducted under the guidance of Major General D R N Hettiarachchi RWP RSP USP, Commander of the 59 Infantry Division, and was supervised by the Brigade Commanders of 591 and 593 Infantry Brigades. Troops from under-command battalions, along with members of civil organizations, other Military forces from as bellows, actively took part in the cleanup effort.

The program saw the collective effort of multiple forces:

• Sri Lanka Army : 36 x 1298 personnel

• Sri Lanka Navy : 03 x 40 personnel

• Special Task Force (STF) : 1 x, 10 personnel

• Sri Lanka Police : 2 x22 personnel

• Civil Security Department: 46 personnel

In addition, several government and civilian organizations actively contributed, including, District Secretariat – Mullaitivu, Maritimepattu Divisional Secretariat, Maritimepattu Pradeshiya Sabha, Medical Officer of Health Office, Zonal Education Office, Department of Fisheries, Vocational Training Authority, Red Cross Organization Approximately 552 local civilians also participated, resulting in the successful cleaning of around 24.72 kilometers of coastline.

Demonstrating strong civil-military cooperation, the operation resulted in the recovery of more than 10,000 kilograms of waste, significantly contributing to the cleanliness and ecological health of the beach environment. This collaborative effort not only aimed at promoting environmental sustainability but also raised awareness among local communities about the importance of preserving coastal ecosystems.
