Upon the outbreak of the forest fire on 08 July 2023, the staff of the range forest office, Habarana and nearby villagers rallied together to initially control the blaze. Their efforts were commendable in minimizing the spread of the fire and protecting the surrounding area. However, recognizing the need for additional resources and expertise, the Sri Lankan Army promptly intervened to provide assistance and ensure the fire was fully extinguished.
The successful containment and extinguishing of the forest fire in the general area of Galoya stands as a testament to the capabilities and readiness of the Sri Lankan Army. The coordinated efforts of the 02 x 30 troops of 7th Light Regiment Sri Lanka Artillery and 01 x 20 troops of 5th (Volunteer) Regiment Sir Lanka Artillery, under the guidance of the General Officer Commanding of 23 Infantry Division Brig Nilantha Premarathne and instruction of the Commander of the 231 Infantry Brigade, were swift actions prevented the fire from spreading to nearby areas and ensured the safety of both the environment and wild life.
