At around 0430 pm on 22 June 23, fire broke out at the garbage dumping site in the Trincomalee Municipal Council located at Kanniya. Troops of 22 Infantry Division was able to stop progress of spreading fire in the garbage dumping site with the support of Navy, police, fire fighting brigade and civilians in the area.
Troops of the 22 Infantry Division and 2 (V) GR under 221 Brigade on the direction given by General Officer Commanding of 22 Infantry Division and supervision of Commander 221 Infantry Brigade, together with emergency teams of the Navy, Police,fighting brigade and civilians were fought against raging fire until evening hours on Thursday (22) and managed to bring it under control. U/C troops of 22 Infantry Division were standby if any emergency in thegarbage dumping site.
Two fire trucks belongs to Trincomalee Fire Brigade came to assist armed forces. Approximately two hectares of garbage dumping site affected by the fire and the reasons for the fire is still not discovered.
