SECURITY FORCE HEADQUARTERS (EAST) SUCCESSFULLY CONCLUDES THE WORKSHOP ON VIOLENT EXTREMISM AND NEW TRENDS

Violent Extremism was raised to a Global priority after 9/11 attack and it was elevated still further raise of ISIS. Sri Lanka also became one of the Victim State, aftermath of Easter Sunday Attack and studying the spectrum of Violent Extremism has been becoming necessity for the contemporary situation since it is directly effect to the National Security.

By having identified the significance of the subject area and as per the directions of the Commander Security Forces (East), a three-day Workshop was conducted under the topic of “Violent Extremism and New Trends” in order to enhance the knowledge of Officers serving under the Security Forces East.

The lecture sessions were conducted by the Mrs Sinduja Jayaratne, Lecturer, Department of Strategic Studies, Faculty of Defence & Strategic Studies, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and it was inclusive of covering the topics on 'Introduction to Extremism', 'Jihadist Thought and Practice', 'Al Qaeda and its Global and Regional Impact', 'ISIS and its Global and Regional Impact', 'Propaganda and its Effects' (Use of social media and internet in radicalization), 'Regional terror landscape related to Islamist Extremism', 'Islamist Extremism and New Security Dimensions', 'Islamist Extremism and its Impact to Sri Lanka'.

A total no of 70 Officers including Commander, Security Forces (East), Major General GRRP Jayawaradena RWP RSP ndu, all Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers, Military Intelligent Officers and Battalion Intelligent Officers attended to the workshop and end of each lecture session, the participant interacted in a Question & Answer session through which their concerns and queries were provided positive solutions. Further participators attended to exercise which conducted to identify the suitable counter propaganda mechanism for Extremism and it was very interested for everyone. End of the session, Memento and Gift were presented as a token of appreciation to the lecturer for shearing her valuable thoughts.
