Security Forces - East and Forward Maintenance Area (East) in collaboration with the Independent Television Network (ITN) organized an annual New Year celebration “Soorya Mangalya” at ITC grounds Minneriya to mark the dawn of Sinhala and Hindu New Year. The festival which included a range of traditional sports events was conducted on Tuesday (13).
Cadjan weaving, bun eating, greasy pole climbing, selection of the ‘Singithi Avurudu Kumari’ and ‘Avurudu Kumara’, eye-placing on the Elephant, fancy dress parade and a number of other traditional and fun-making games dominated the day’s proceedings with the attendance of Commander Security Force - East Major General Channa Weerasuriya as the Chief Guest. The festival site was decorated and arranged depicting a traditional rural village. The troops of Security Force (East) gathered to the ITC grounds to take part in competitions.
At the end of the festival, Major General Channa Weerasuriya Commander Security Force – East, Brigadier Mahesh Abeyrathna Commander Forward Maintenance Area – East and several senior officers gave away gifts and trophies to the winners of different events and competitions.
