SF (EAST) CONTRIBUTES TO INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP DAY

To coincide with the ongoing National Marine Resources Conservation Week (19-25 Sept) and the International Coastal Cleanup Day-2020 (19 September), Security Forces (East) launched several beach cleaning programmes covering several coastal areas highly polluted due to discarded wrappers, polythene, plastic bottles, empty beer cans, empty liquor bottles etc.

In line with the International Coastal Cleanup Day and National Marine Resources Conservation Week, these beach cleaning programmes were organized under the guidance of the Commander Security Force (East) in view of creating an attitudinal awakening of the general public by recognizing the value of coastal and marine resources and with the objective of obtaining community contribution for beach cleanup efforts.

Accordingly, the troops of 3 (V) Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, 11 and 16 Battalions of Sri Lanka National Guard of 241 Infantry Brigade in coordination with ‘Marine Environment Protection Authority’ of Ampara conducted a beach clearing programme on 22, 24 and 25 September 2020 at Sinnamuththuvaram, Thambiluvil and Kalmunei coastal areas with the support of Police and Civil Security Department members. In addition to that, troops of 23 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and 8 Battalion of Sri Lanka National Guard together with Sri Lanka Navy conducted a beach cleaning operation in Thirukkovil coastal belt.

Meanwhile, the troops of 4 Gamunu Watch and 11(V) Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment of 231 Infantry Brigade extended support to clean four coastal sites in Brigade Area Of Responsibility namely Ariyampathi, Kallar, Pasikudah and Kiran. A large gathering of troops with all volunteers contributed to the drive with enthusiasm.

In the meantime, the troops of 15 Battalion, Sri Lanka light Infantry, 6 Gajaba Regiment and 2(V) Gajaba Regiment under command to 221, 223 and 233 Brigades respectively launched another beach cleaning project as their contribution to this worthy cause.
