NEW GENERAL OFFICER COMMANDING 22 INFANTRY DIVISION MAJOR GENERAL A I MARASINGHE RWP RSP ASSUMES DUTIES

The newly-appointed General Officer Commanding 22 Infantry Division, Major General A I Marasinghe RWP RSP of the Gajaba Regiment, assumed duties as the 24th General Officer Commanding 22 Division, Trincomalee on 04 November 2019.

Major General Athula Marasinghe was born on 25th April 1965. He studied at Wesley College and Royal College, Colombo and joined the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 17th January 1986. After completion of his training, he joined the Gajaba Regiment as a Second Lieutenant on 10th December 1986.

A series of formalities were held at the Headquarters 22 Division in connection with the welcome ceremony of the newly-appointed GOC. He received a Guard Turnout and a Guard of Honour presented by the troops of 2nd (Volunteer) Battalion of Gajaba Regiment in conformity with military formalities.

Invocation of blessings of the Maha Sangha, religious rites and rituals got underway at the office of the GOC and chanting of Seth Pirith. Maj Gen Athula Marasinghe placed his signature on an official document, symbolizing the formal acceptance of his new appointment at the auspicious time whilst chanting was on.

Afterwards he planted a sapling in the HQ premises and participated for a troop address followed by all ranks tea.

Senior Officers/ Officers attended for the event including Commander 221 Brigade, Commander 222 Brigade, Commander 224 Brigade and all staff officers of 22 Division.
